Let's start a flame war: Does this world exst?
Because it is entirely acceptable to believe that we don't really exist (OR IS IT?!?!?), I'm starting this tell-all poll.
I made the question a bit too broad, perhaps, but what the heck. And here's a fire extinguisher:

I wonder if that 50% for "It's impossible to know." was influenced by the Matrix or Plato

As for the question that was asked, of course you can never know. Since it's the existence of the universe that's in question, you can't trust somebody who is a part of that universe (like us) to be able to test it accurately. And since you can't very well step outside the universe to test it, there's no way of knowing. I would be very interested in seeing how those who said, "Of course it exists!" can prove such a statement. mag |

Of course, if the world only existed in my mind, then mag would stop turning everything into an irrelevant abstraction. So that rules THAT possibility out. |

The next person who mentions The Matrix in a philosophical context I will shoot in the kneecap with extreme prejudice.

And? How does that invalidate what I said? Even an illusion must "exist" in some form or another. That was my entire point.

The surest thing you can say is that you exist as some thinking thing. And even that is difficult to prove. But let's assume that's true. Are you the entire universe? That's quite an ego. mag |

And again you've got me completely backwards. I said nothing even remotely like "I exist as a thinking thing", because that I CAN'T know. EDIT: So as not to quibble over multiple definitions, an "illusion" in the sense of a magician's slight of hand could be deemed not to exist. But that obviously isn't the context it's being used in here. Last edited by Jackal; 06-23-2004 at 07:57 AM. |
