Only one to go, it's an obscure show but the whole series was released internationally on DVD. I know that because I own a copy.

Both. I saw half of an episode once (I recognised Adrian Lester and kept watching). The Indiana Jones hint made me think of this, so I looked up the opening theme...

Although, to be honest, I had to look up Lester's filmography first before I got the series title...

As for the rest: how hard can it be to guess a show when I've practically told you already?

Here are the facts:
It's a British series
It was cancelled after one season due to high production costs
It's a Victorian crime drama series
The main charcters actually lived at some point
One fo the main characters is a world renowned author the other the person he based the charcter that made him famous on.

I wonder how many series fit that description

That's right! If you ever happen to have the time I seriously advise anyone to watch it. It's extremely well done, very stylish with very good acting all around. Especially fun if you're a Sherlockian.
