Default Latest Books Bought

Identical to the 'DVD's You've Just Bought' thread, but this time books.

I found this a week or two ago at the charity shop I work at:

It was brand new; never used. A bargain at only £2!

I should watch the movie again at some point. I haven't seen it for awhile.

A volunteer at work lent me the second part of the Millenium trilogy:

And then I have part 1 & 2 of the third story arc to the Higurashi When They Cry manga series:

What about you guys?

Get them to lend you the third one as well. They pretty much form a continuous story split into two parts.

The Elephant by Slawomir Mrozek. A collection of short stories (and I do mean short. 176 pages with 42 stories included) written in Poland in 1957, Extremely satirical (it's a wonder he wasn't locked up for some of his jabs at the reigning communist regime) and genuinely laugh out loud funny in parts. Plus, if you don't like any particular story a new one will be along in a few pages.

The Death-Defying Pepper Roux by Geraldine McCaughrean. When he was borne Paul "Pepper" Roux's aunt predicted he would die before he became 14 (Saint Constance told her in a dream) On the day of his fourteenth birthday he runs away in an attempt to avoid his fate, hiding himself in a variety of different lives on the way. (ship's captain, telegram boy and journalist to name but a few) A wonderfully lively book with a vibrant cast of characters and a good ending.

Yeah, she's agreed to. She's taking her time with it at the moment, which is just as well, as I'm taking my time with the books I'm currently reading.

2666 by Roberto Bolaño

Which I'm reading at the moment. The book is divided into 5 parts that each tell a different story but relate back to the main story which is set in the city of Santa Teresa in the north of Mexico. I'm almost half way through.

I also purchased Ulysses by James Joyce. Which I have wanted to read for ages. Has anyone read this? What do you think about it?

Couldn't resist Terry Pratchett + Discworld + football

I was also going to buy

Which I've been thinking of buying for a while, but decided to read some reviews to get a better grip of what the book is really like.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, which I just finished reading, is a masterful combination of history and suspense, and I recommend it highly.

I also recently bought U Is for Undertow by Sue Grafton, Hardball by Sara Paretsky, This Body of Death by Elizabeth George, and Elizabeth Peters' latest Amelia Peabody mystery, A River in the Sky, which I'm reading now.

Not sure. The idea of creating this thread came to me because of all the books I've bought recently. Plus, it may help people discover new authors/books by sharing info. You never know.

On a whim the other night I bought a Metal Gear Solid novel lol.

I also bought the Lord of the Rings books as I've recently finished The Hobbit.

Oh yeah and I bought Angela's Ashes again as I'd lost my copy.

I need to re-buy the Rings trilogy; my copy is quite tatty.

Just ordered from telltale's store.

* Romance novels for old women, in case you didn't know.

Yeah, but that was about what you're reading, instead of what you've just bought

I, for example am not reading what I just bought. I'm reading something I bought last summer

Manga, manga and more manga!

From the dealers' room at the Anime North convention the previous weekend (mostly to complete some series):
One Piece v. 17-28
Shaman King v. 1-12
O-Parts Hunter (a.k.a 666 Satan) v. 18
20th Century Boys v. 4
Sand Land
Fushigi Yugi v. 14

Last week, from the comic store:
One Piece v. 49-53
Naruto v. 48
Bleach v. 31
Inuyasha v. 48
20th Century Boys v. 8
Hôshin Engi v. 19

Unfortunately, I collect manga volumes faster than I can read them, so I have like, over 200 unread volumes on my shelf!

Wow! That's a lot of manga. I barely have a shelf for 20 let alone 200. Of the few that I have though, the Death Note series/box set is one of my treasured possessions. And I'm liking the Higurashi series at the moment. Probably moreso than the anime series. I like how it's all cute and bouncy in the first half, then the second, it turns into a murder mystery/psychological horror. You also learn a bit more about the characters in each story arc.

As for Bleach, I did consider getting the manga series, but there are just far too many volumes. That series just goes on and on and on...

just bought that as well, although I'm not a fan of football it's Pratchett and he can usually make the most boring ideas seem fun and hilarious, throw in the crazy Discworld wiz(z)ards...
I'm actually ashamed I didn't buy it sooner, usually I buy the Discworld books as soon as they're released, despite my preference for paperback instead of hardback, but I actually completely missed that this one was out already

Not purchased by me as such but kindly purchased for me as a recommendation by a Swedish member of these very forums. I need to finish Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones" first but then I'll be right on it.
