Default The amazing Honda ad

I'm sure some of you people have seen this amazing ad

http://stlplaces.com/honda.html

I saw it for the first time about 2 months ago when I found it in the web.

It's based on Rube Goldberg's "Inventions" cartoons.

http://www.rube-goldberg.com/

Now this guy was a genious, I have to admit that before this day I had never even heard about this man.

Rube Goldberg gets his think-tank working and evolves the simplified pencil-sharpener.

"Open window (A) and fly kite (B). String (C) lifts small door (D) allowing moths (E) to escape and eat red flannel shirt (F). As weight of shirt becomes less, shoe (G) steps on switch (H) which heats electric iron (I) and burns hole in pants (J). Smoke (K) enters hole in tree (L), smoking out opossum (M) which jumps into basket (N), pulling rope (O) and lifting cage (P), allowing woodpecker (Q) to chew wood from pencil (R), exposing lead. Emergency knife (S) is always handy in case opossum or the woodpecker gets sick and can't work."

Ppffft it's been done before. And much better.

There's a movie that's about 30 minutes long. It's pretty old. I don't remember the title right now but I've seen it many times and it's called something like ... The Circle of Life, or The Order of Things, or whatever. It's neither of those but something in that vein. And it's awesome. It goes on for 30 minutes and it's basically the best thing you can watch at really crazy hours. If anyone has the title let me know, so I can get a permanent copy of it some time.

I bet this ad was either inspired by that film or if they got the same guys to do it. Great ad though. One of the best I've ever seen.

Edit: now that I think of it, I remember Ernest Adams referring to this ad at a conference a few months ago, saying that everyone thought it was CGI -- even the Honda execs. After that he made a great point but I forgot.

That would make one hell of a puzzle for an adventure game

This guy should've created adventure games back then

I really liked the nails rotating and hitting each other. That's one of the things I've never seen in this kind of sequence.

Heh heh, you mean "The Way Things Go"

they DO hint the name in that Honda ad page you know

I'm just getting it for the ed2k network, I couldn't find it anywhere else.

I haven't seen it yet, but I bet it's something awesome as you said.

And as they say on that Honda page:

Quote:
Some company that produced a longer movie (I'm not providing the link because that's the way things go.) of some other Rube Goldberg setup is suing claiming Honda stole the "idea" from them!

Pretty impressive. I believe them when they say it took 606 takes.

That's a real shame. CGI has made stuff like the Honda ad seem mundane - it's hard to be impressed by anything you see on-screen. I bet the creators sort-of wish they'd made it before a computer-generated ad would have been possible.

Either that, or they wish they'd just done it all with CGI to start with...

I don't know, I would probably be pretty pleased with myself if I could pull that off without CGI.

I just saw the "Der lauf der dinge", and I just have to comment how bad the camera work and editing was. If their intention was to capture that on film, they certainly didn't do that part well, although the whole chain reaction was amazing.

They often zoomed in in the wrong places, and didn't when it would have been necessary. Wasn't always clear how the reactions happened. Slow motion would have been nice in some places.

I agree. I think it was pretty amateur (as in: not professional filmmakers).

Hmm, I just watched it today and I must say that the cameraguy really was an amateur.

And I have a strong feeling that whole 30 minutes of footage was not recorded on one take.

There was like 15 cuts in the footage, every time when the camera zoomed to the liquid or smoke on a table.

Anyway it was quite interesting use of gunpowder, fire and chemical mixtures.

I still say the Honda ad is better...
