Default New 7 Wonders of the World - Election

It seems like someone has decided that we should choose new 7 wonders of the world. Apparently because since 6 of the previous wonders doesn't exist any more, we need new ones.. (I'm just afraid this will mean that ppl. forget about the old ones.. )

http://www.new7wonders.com/index.php

You can apparently vote over the internet or over phone,
and you have 21 different options:

The Acropolis of Athens (450 - 330 B.C.) Athens, Greece
Alhambra (12th century) Granada, Spain
Angkor (12th century) Cambodia
The Pyramid at Chichén Itzá (before 800 A.D.) Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Christ Redeemer (1931) Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The Roman Colosseum (70 - 82 A.D.) Rome, Italy
Statues of Easter Island (10th - 16th Century) Easter Island, Chile
The Eiffel Tower (1887 - 89) Paris, France
The Great Wall of China (220 B.C and 1368 - 1644 A.D.) China
The Hagia Sophia (532 - 537 A.D.) Istanbul, Turkey
Kiyomizu Temple (749 - 1855) Kyoto, Japan
The Kremlin and Red Square (1156 - 1850) Moscow, Russia
Machu Picchu (1460-1470), Peru
Neuschwanstein Castle (1869 -1884) Schwangau, Germany
Petra (9 B.C. - 40 A.D.), Jordan
The Pyramids of Giza (2600 - 2500 B.C), Egypt
The Statue of Liberty (1886) New York City, U.S.A.
Stonehenge (3000 B.C. - 1600 B.C.) Amesbury, United Kingdom
Sydney Opera House (1954 - 73) Sydney, Australia
The Taj Mahal (1630 A.D.) Agra, India
Timbuktu (12th century) Mali

I'm a bit sad that it has to be a wonder that exists today, I would like to vote for the library in Alexandria.. Oh well. Of the alternatives above, there's a few I'm sure of, a few I know I don't want, and way to many I'm unsure about..

My list is currently:

Must have:
Petra
Easter Island Statues
Great Wall of China

Pretty sure about:
Pyramids
Stonehenge
The Pyramid at Chichén Itzá
and a modern one:
The Kremlin and Red Square

I know I don't want:
Christ Redeemer
Statue of Liberty
Sydney Opera House
and I'm also kinda negative towards Taj Mahal..

What do you think? Are there some you think should have been on this list?

Wasn't Neuschwanstein Castle in Gabriel Knight 2?

My memory is terrible.

Schloss Neuschwanstein is the number one most visited castle in Germany. It was the royal castle of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. It is the Ultimate fairy tale castle.

And yes, I think Schloss Neuschwanstein was in Gabriel Knight 2

Schloss Neuschwanstein

Personally, I prefer Burg Eltz, which is the second most visited Castle (there's no real word for "Burg" in English) in Germany. Everyone I've met that has visited both Schloss Neuschwanstein and Burg Eltz has agreed with me, that Burg Eltz is much nicer, because it's actually a real castle, and not as showy as Neuschwanstein.

Burg Eltz

Ah crap!
Now I want to go to Germany and visit castles.
I have enough trouble with my desires to go to Scotland (for the trekking and the pubs) and Spain (for the great climate and the food).

And combined with my recent desire to have puppies (Jaffa's) it just doesn't work out.

Give in to the temptation, Lena...

Maybe we could meet up in Frankfurt if you ever decide to come to Germany. I'd love to show you the castle ruin in my neighbour town. There's not much to it, but it's still lovely.

This is so silly. Why seven again? Why not the twenty-one wonders of the world, instead of just going for the few which have the most fans?

Why aren't the pyramids automatically a wonder. I mean, does it make sense that they used to be a wonder back when they were the old 7 wonders and now they are not a wonder anymore?

I think it's because the old 7 wonders were chosen by one guy, and the new 7 wonders are to be chosen by people all over the world..

I honestly believe that the Seven Wonders of the World would never, repeat, never, be complete without the Hagia Sofia. God, that building is incredible. The Alhambra is a definite, too.

Since I'm from the US, I'd through in a vote for the Statue of Liberty, that great symbol of unity between France and America.. It's really the only "incredible" building in the US, because the US hasn't really been a country long enough to have very many great examples of architecture.

I remember an article in a newspaper, which said that the internet really should be one of the wonders. And I can't agree more. It's undoubtably man's crowning achievment, considering its incredible size and magnitude.

Maybe I'm too jaded, but of the "wonders" I have seen, few have really impressed me. If I had to choose, I guess I would go with:

The Great Wall
Angkor
Machu Picchu
The Pyramids
The Hagia Sofia

That's it. Only five wonders. Though I might want to add the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona to that list.

Stuff I would especially not want to include:
Alhambra - don't see what all the fuss is about
Stonehenge - it's a ring of rocks. You could build one in your garden if you wanted.
Statue of Liberty - yes, very iconic and symbolic and all, but not particularly wondrous.

It's not what's outside, its what's inside.
The entire Moorish section is just breathtaking in its mosaics.

I've been there, and it made no particular impression on me.

I went to Munich in July a couple of years back and took TWO road trips to Neuschwanstein with 25 pounds of photo gear and BOTH TIMES was met with fog and rain. *sigh*

I'd like to see the Petronas Towers as a wonder of the world. It's a very high building, and a beautiful one too! That is a difficult feat to accomplish. Look at all the other skyscrapers in the world. They's just high... some of them are even ugly, like the one in Taiwan that currently is the highest building on the planet (I forget what it was called).

Edit: Why are all these 'new' wonders so old? The youngest is from the 1970's. I can think of a few modern buildings that deserve the title Wonder of the World.

Hmm....when you come right down to it, this like anything else is subjective. It's also based on cultural preferences. I think it's strange that there are so few modern structures listed there. I suppose the reasoning is that the ancients had fewer resources available. Why the Statue of Liberty? It's a nice statue, but when it comes to big achievements, wouldn't Mt. Rushmore have been more difficult? Not that I approve of defacing the gorgeous Black Hills with a bunch of presidential mugs, but you get what I mean...

What about things like ships? There have been some incredible ships constructed over the millennia, and without them, people would not have spread all over the globe...

I also like the idea of the internet as a wonder...but if I'm reading it correctly, the wonders are supposed to be architectural achievements...in which case ships too are questionable- but defensible.

Personally, I've always been impressed by mound builders. Does that count?
