Aye, happy Independance Day. You Americans have too many holidays, jammy sods. We need to be colonised so we can regain control and have an extra day off.

Come on, you can't complain about our piles of public holidays! There are so many around May/June that I can never remember what they're even for. Whitsun, anyone?!

Seriously though, we have way more statutary holidays in Europe than they do in the US, so we can't begrudge them a day away from the grindstone.

Even if it is celebrating the day they struck out on their own and began developing their unique brand of foolishness.

Yeah, we do have quite a few around May, and a couple coming up in August too. But there's a holiday-free lull between the two, which sucks, cos that's usually when we get our scheduled two or three weeks of decent weather a year Ah well, glad that we win on holidays, if not general prices and movie/game release dates. Those sods still have those over us

Heh, most of the posts here are from non-Americans. I guess these people aren't too patriotic.

Hey, we're celebrating, don't pick on us, besides, it's early yet here - only 10:15 am on the east coast.

Happy July 4th!

Spoiler:
Pardon me for being clueless, but shouldn't that be "independence"? Since Jaz is the only one who picked this option, while three other people chose "independance", should I assume there is some joke or cultural reference involved in misspelling it?

Spoiler:
Um, no joke involved. Some of us are just more tolerant of minor spelling errors.

Happy July Fourth Everyone!

Well, yeah, if by "being tolerant of" we mean "making them".

A Dependant is someone who is dependent upon someone or something. The state of being dependent is called dependency in British spelling, and dependancy in US spelling (I think US English uses both spellings of dependency. British spelling uses only dependency). However, no matter which spelling, the term of not being dependent is called Independence, with no alternate spellings.

I didn't actually pay attention how "Independence" was spelled in the thread title. I just type it with "e" automatically.

Jazhara, how in the world do you remember all that? Is there some sort of mnemonic device involved?
