Because most people come in, whine about nobody talking, then leave 5 seconds later.

The second step is, of course, optional.

I'm guilty of staying connected without actually being available to chat - a bad habit, I know - but just because nobody is talking at that exact moment doesn't mean you have to leave.

And what is whining about nobody talking supposed to achieve? Do you come on the forums and whine about nobody starting threads? Or do you perhaps... start one yourself?!

Jeysie is right, numbers have nothing to do with it. The will to participate is what's required, and perhaps we're all just forum people rather than live chat people?

Sorry if this sounds antagonistic, I have enjoyed the odd times there has been real chat going on in #ag. Honest!

The reason I said more peeps would help is because the more there are then the bigger the chance someone will be looking in the chat when someone new joins.

irc is for idling, and script messages about tvtorrents and who is playing CoD2 or CSS. Forums, IM, etc... are the only places where people actually chat in my experience. On the rare occasions that people aren't afk on irc, you end up with pages and pages of chat, most of it jokes and links to funny pages. I guess it's like chatting in a group, it's never that productive, and people form smaller groups and float around those smaller groups.

I have gone into the chatroom and attempted to chat and got nothing. This has happened a multitude of times. Why would I stick around after that?! I do try to learn from my experiences. I wouldn't stick around a dead forum either.

Well, since the Glottis I know (the one from Grim Fandango) has large hands which would make it difficult to type on a standard keyboard, I'm sure that was just a typo.
