There will always be Japan for 2D animation, and the Simpsons, theyre never gonna die

I'm actually hoping to see a return to 2d animation with the new people in. The decision to close their traditional animation studios was made by Michael Eisner, remember.

The Curious George (from some other studio) trailer was hugely popular at the Narnia screening I went to last month. Looks like 2d animation is making a return, if not via Disney.

I'm hoping too that 2d animation at Disney Studios makes a comeback in the upcoming years.

And I'm not meaning the Korean sweatshops that make the lousy straight to dvd sequels of the classic movies.

You do know that all the latest 3D disney movies are actually truly 3D, its just giving you a illussion (sp) of 2D.

That depends on market trends.

Not true. Disney 2d was all hand-inked and photographed up through Little Mermaid. At that point they switched to a digital inking system known as CAPS, which they developed along with Pixar (hey!). Although CAPS allowed digital paint, it didn't actually use 3d models except in certain scenes, such as the ballroom swoop in Beauty and the Beast or the cave escape from Aladdin. Those were animated seperately and incorporated in editing, though. The characters in those scenes, by the way, are still 2d.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPS_%2...tion_System%29 <-- more info on CAPs, foor the curious.

They also had the ability to model certain parts of characters in 3d and then composite the whole thing together. A lot of expense and animator hours on Bambi went into keeping track of antler motion, because it's a complex 3d object that was being animated in 2d. For Fantasia 2000, in the Stravinsky segment, they modeled the elk's antlers in 3d and then composited them onto the 2d animated body for the final frame.

As a bit of fun animation trivia, by the way, the last existing Disney-built multiplane camera is sitting in the lobby of the Disney Archives at the studio in Burbank. The cameras haven't been used since CAPS became the new standard, but they're really cool devices.

I was half right, biatch!

Okay, a quarter right.

But when I saw the making of Emperors New Groove they said it was 3D generated.

I'd bet that the backgrounds are, in a lot of scenes. The palace, especially, is almost definitely a 3d model. I'll also bet the characters are still 'traditional' 2d, though

And yay for Futurama... it was on Billy West's site a couple days ago
