Dutch, English, French and a trifle German. There was a time I wanted to learn Japanese but then I realized I didn't really care.

Mine, in order of expertise:

- German (read: absolutely - write: above average - speak: i trip over my words occasionally )
- French (read: reasonably well - write: if you don't expect grammar - speak: gobblegobble?)
- Afrikaans (read: reasonably well - write: no, no, no! - speak: pleeeease, noooo!)

...and whilst I don't have any clue about it, I have the patience to sit down with a Nahuatl dictionary to come up with new phrases which are no doubt complete garbage in regards to grammar.

I'm not as fluent in Affrikaans as I used to be. It was my first language.

You can see what a major cultural difference Portugal and South Africa have. It was hard to learn all these languages. Not that I had much choice.

Dutch
English
German
Afrikaans (but only because it originates from the Dutch language, and a lot of words still sound very familiar)

Of course I know some Norwegian and Danish too.

Spanish and English. I can understand a little bit of Italian, Portuguese and French, just enough to not get lost while reading.

I'm the same with German. It's currently kicking my butt, and I'm this close to giving it up as a lost cause and switching to Spanish. At least Spanish has a practical application where I live...almost all my neighbors speak it.

Before you have learned another language to mess you up. Studies have shown that babies can learn all languages with equal facility, and can learn multiple languages much easier than adults if they're exposed to them regularly.

Dutch, Swedish and English mainly... but I understand German fairly well also and I know a tiny bit of French. Not good at the forming coherrent sentences though. Would be fun to speak them properly... wish I also knew Italian and Spanish... there I don't get much further than ordering a sandwich "senza burro e senza formaggio" and saying "que?" a lot.

I had some Latin and Greek in school but I can't seem to remember particularly anything.

As for me:
Swedish
Finnish
English
Some German

And now when Henke brought up Danish and Norwegian I guess I know those languages also, since they are so close to Swedish. Well, I can read both languages, but write and talk on the other hand: Not in a million years! Scanian on the other hand...

Lately I've been thinking of which is my second language: Finnish or English? I've read Finnish captions on TV since I came out of my mothers womb, so my understanding of the Finnish language is, I would say, better than my understanding of the English language. At some point I think English will catch up though, because I'm getting better at that all the time.
As for writing I'm definitely better at English, no doubt about it. That's not a very good thing since I most likely will have to work in this country in the future and it's not easy to find a job here that doesn't require Finnish. I just like to write in English so much more than in Finnish. Sad but true.
Speaking is the tricky part. Tricky as in I don't know which one I'm better at. Weird as hell when you take into consideration that I've never really spoken in English with anyone ever. Still I think my English would be as good (or as bad, depending on how you look at it) as my spoken Finnish.
Time will tell I guess. Especially if I and a certain wormstud meet at some point.

This sounds just inappropriate when said by someone who has mastered Finnish.

It's different, as I've heard and read Finnish ever since I was a little kid. If I would have to learn Finnish from scratch now it would be a bloody nightmare!
