Dutch, English, French and a trifle German. There was a time I wanted to learn Japanese but then I realized I didn't really care.

Mine, in order of expertise: - English (read: certainly - write: my hobby - speak: with a fiercely british accent) - German (read: absolutely - write: above average - speak: i trip over my words occasionally ) - French (read: reasonably well - write: if you don't expect grammar - speak: gobblegobble?) - Afrikaans (read: reasonably well - write: no, no, no! - speak: pleeeease, noooo!) ...and whilst I don't have any clue about it, I have the patience to sit down with a Nahuatl dictionary to come up with new phrases which are no doubt complete garbage in regards to grammar.

I'm not as fluent in Affrikaans as I used to be. It was my first language.
You can see what a major cultural difference Portugal and South Africa have. It was hard to learn all these languages. Not that I had much choice.

Spanish and English. I can understand a little bit of Italian, Portuguese and French, just enough to not get lost while reading.

Dutch, Swedish and English mainly... but I understand German fairly well also and I know a tiny bit of French. Not good at the forming coherrent sentences though. Would be fun to speak them properly... wish I also knew Italian and Spanish... there I don't get much further than ordering a sandwich "senza burro e senza formaggio" and saying "que?" a lot.
I had some Latin and Greek in school but I can't seem to remember particularly anything. |

...you'll seriously need it. As for me: Swedish Finnish English Some German And now when Henke brought up Danish and Norwegian I guess I know those languages also, since they are so close to Swedish. Well, I can read both languages, but write and talk on the other hand: Not in a million years! Scanian on the other hand... Lately I've been thinking of which is my second language: Finnish or English? I've read Finnish captions on TV since I came out of my mothers womb, so my understanding of the Finnish language is, I would say, better than my understanding of the English language. At some point I think English will catch up though, because I'm getting better at that all the time. As for writing I'm definitely better at English, no doubt about it. That's not a very good thing since I most likely will have to work in this country in the future and it's not easy to find a job here that doesn't require Finnish. I just like to write in English so much more than in Finnish. Sad but true. Speaking is the tricky part. Tricky as in I don't know which one I'm better at. Weird as hell when you take into consideration that I've never really spoken in English with anyone ever. Still I think my English would be as good (or as bad, depending on how you look at it) as my spoken Finnish. Time will tell I guess. Especially if I and a certain wormstud meet at some point. |
