The idealogy of the folk music movement was to focus on meaningful lyrics and simple melodies played (at least initially) on a minimum of accoustic instruments. This was something of a knee-jerk reaction to the ever-increasingly complex arrangements of popular music of the 1950s (e.g. Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Tony Bennett, Perry Como, etc. who recorded albums with 30 or 40 piece orchestras backing them up, yet sang utterly vapid and often silly, meaningless lyrics).
The rumor that Puff The Magic Dragon is a song about drug use is a result of the older generation's witch-hunt for drug references in the music favored by the younger generation of the 1960s. As the lyrics show, it has nothing to do with drug use, but is about a boy abandoning his imaginary childhood friend.
Jefferson Airplane satirized that period's witch-hunt atmosphere by releasing "White Rabbit", a song with obvious drug references inspired by Lewis Carroll's book "Alice In Wonderland".
Very illuminating. I have nothing against folk music- I just don't see how it could ever bring me to tears.

This may sound silly to some of you, but I almost always get tears in my eyes when listening to "I'll make a man out of you". It's tears of joy, though, and the movie always makes me optimistic again. It's just such a monumental moment when Mulan climbs the pole, and her face is illuminated by the rising sun.

Also, I sometimes cry when listening to Loreena McKennits "The Highwayman", because it's such a sad tale that is told.

I've cried in many Disney movies, I dunno why, they really know how to trigger your emotions.

Have you guys seen the new Wow Expansion?

I tried to pre-order it a EB, and the dumbass clerk insisted that it didn't exist. Even though it's the number one pre-ordered game on their site.

I can't think of any songs that make me cry off-hand. If I'm in the right (or wrong, depending on how you look at it) mood, and if the piece of music is particularly well performed, then maybe, but I don't think there's an individual piece that I could (rely on?) for the desired effect.

Well that's because we're British and we're not emotional don't you know. Big fat hairy balls to sad songs. But here's some stuff that makes me think

Bon Jovi, Always
David Bowie, Life on Mars
Green Day, Time of your life
Everclear, Father of mine/I will buy you a new life
Stereophonics - A thousand Trees

Mine is probably Between the bars. I've also got a clip of him performing live at the Oscars. Can barely watch it now. What with him standing next to Celine Dion . That's just so surreal.
