For Scott, I present two songs, one of new-found desire and the second one of comfort.

Voi, che sapete, Cherubino's aria from Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro

Voi, che sapete che cosa è amor,
Donne, vedete s'io l'ho nel cor!
Quello ch'io provo, vi ridirò,
È per me nuovo; capir nol so.
Sento un affetto pien di desir,
Ch'ora è diletto, ch'ora e martir. .
Gelo, e poi sento l'alma avvampar,
E in un momento torno a gelar.
Ricerco un bene fuori di me,
Non so chi il tiene, non so cos'è.
Sospiro e gemo senza voler,
Palpito e tremo senza saper,
Non trovo pace notte nè di,
Ma pur mi piace languir così!

You ladies, who know what love is,
See if I have it in my heart!
I'll tell you what I'm going through,
It's new to me; I can't understand it.
I feel a liking full of desire
That now is pleasure, now is agony.
I freeze, and then feel my soul burning,
And in another moment go back to freezing.
I look for a good outside myself,
I don't know who has it, I don't know what it is.
I sigh and groan without wanting to,
I quiver and tremble without knowing it,
I find no peace night or day,
And yet I like suffering this way!

Voi che sapete has always been one of my favorite arias. It' sung by Cherubino, a young (very young) page in service of the count. He sings the song to the countess and Susannah as a plea to show them how much love he has to give. When I finally got my hands on the translation, I got a big jolt reading it. I haven't yet found words that describes how I felt when I fell in love for the first time.

Everything's Allright from Jesus Christ Superstar

Mary Magdalene)
Try not to get worried
Try not to turn on to
Problems that upset you
(oh) Don't you know
Everything's alright
Yes everything's fine
And we want you to sleep well tonight
Let the world turn without you tonight
If we try
We'll get by
So forget all about us tonight

(Apostles' Women)
Everything's all right
Yes everything's all right yes

(Mary Magdalene)
Sleep and I shall soothe you
Calm you and anoint you
Myrrh for your hot forehead
(oh) Then you'll feel
Everything's all right
Yes everything's fine
And it's cool and the ointment's sweet
For the fire in your head and feet
Close your eyes
Close your eyes
And relax
Think of nothing tonight

(Apostles' Women)
Everything's all right
Yes everything's all right yes

One of my favorite Andrew Lloyd Webber songs. A great song of comfort if you stopp listening right before Judas' rant.

First one is Javert's Lament from Les Miserables:

Who is this man?
What sort of devil is he
To have me caught in a trap
And choose to let me go free?
It was his hour at last
To put a seal on my fate
Wipe out the past
And wash me clean off the slate!
All it would take
Was a flick of his knife.
Vengeance was his
And he gave me back my life!

Damned if I'll live in the debt of a thief!
Damned if I'll yield at the end of the chase.
I am the Law and the Law is not mocked
I'll spit his pity right back in his face
There is nothing on earth that we share
It is either Valjean or Javert!

How can I now allow this man
To hold dominion over me?
This desperate man whom I have hunted
He gave me my life. He gave me freedom.
I should have perished by his hand
It was his right.
It was my right to die as well
Instead I live... but live in hell.

And my thoughts fly apart
Can this man be believed?
Shall his sins be forgiven?
Shall his crimes be reprieved?

And must I now begin to doubt,
Who never doubted all these years?
My heart is stone and still it trembles
The world I have known is lost in shadow.
Is he from heaven or from hell?
And does he know
That granting me my life today
This man has killed me even so?

I am reaching, but I fall
And the stars are black and cold
As I stare into the void
Of a world that cannot hold
I'll escape now from the world
From the world of Jean Valjean.
There is nowhere I can turn
There is no way to go on....

Second one is from "O Fortuna" from Carmina Burana by Karl Orff

O Fortuna,
velut luna
statu variabilis,
semper crescis
aut descrescis;
vita detestabilis
nunc obdurat
et tunc curat
ludo mentis aciem,
egestatem,
potestatem
dissolvit ut glaciem.

Sors inmanis
et inanis,
rota tu volubilis,
status malus,
vana salus
semper dissolubilis,
obrumbratam
et velatam
mihi quoque niteris,
nunc per ludum
dorsum nudum
fero tui sceleris.

Sors salutis
et virtutis
mihi nunc contraria,
est affectus
et defectus
semper in angaria;
hac in hora
sine mora
cordis pulsum tangite,
quod per sortem
sternit fortem
mecum omnes plangite.

Have you ever sung this with a choir? If not, then I implore you to. Great fun .

And for my choice of song...

Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad,
Other things just make you swear and curse,
When you're chewing life's gristle,
Don't grumble,
Give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
[whistle]
Always look on the light side of life.
[whistle]

If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten,
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps.
Just purse your lips and whistle.
That's the thing.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
[whistle]
Always look on the right side of life,
[whistle]

For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin.
Give the audience a grin.
Enjoy it. It's your last chance, anyhow.
So,...

Always look on the bright side of death,
[whistle]
Just before you draw your terminal breath.
[whistle]

Life's a piece of shit,
When you look at it.
Life's a laugh and death's a joke it's true.
You'll see it's all a show.
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
Always look on the right side of life.
[whistle]

Always look on the bright side of life!
[whistle]
Always look on the bright side of life!
[whistle]
Always look on the bright side of life!
[whistle]
Always look on the bright side of life!
[whistle]
Always look on the bright side of life!
[whistle]
Always look on the bright side of life!
[whistle]
Always look on the bright side of life!
[whistle]
Always look on the bright side of life!
[whistle]

Repeat to fade...

No, but I used to sing classic solo, I even performed in the Royal Opera in Brussels... of coarse that was a few years ago. I'm not allowed to sing until I reach the age of 20, that way I have a greater chance of preserving my voice - I think it was just an excuse my teachers gave me to tell me I lost the quality of my voice.

Wild Packs of Family Dogs - Modest Mouse

A wild pack of family dogs came running through the yard one day
My father got his gun, shot it up they ran away, ok

A wild pack of family dogs came runnin through the yard
And as my own dog ran away with them I didnt say much of anything at all

A wild pack of family dogs came runnin through the yard
As my little sister played, the dogs took her away
And I guess she was eaten up, ok
My mothers cryin’ blood dust now

My daddy quit his job today
I guess he was fired but thats ok
And I’m sitting outside by my mud lake
Waiting for the pack to take me away

Right after I die, the dogs start running up towards the glowing sky
There they will receive their rewards

Now, you've done it, Rob. You shouldn't have posted a Monty Python song on this thread!

I’m a lumberjack
And I’m OK
I sleep all night
And I work all day.

(Chorus)
He’s a lumberjack
And he’s OK
He sleeps all night
And he works all day.

I cut down trees
I eat my lunch
I go to the lavatory
On Wednesday I go shopping
And have buttered scones for tea.

(Mounties)
He cuts down trees
He eats his lunch
He goes to the lavatory
On Wednesday he goes shopping
And has buttered scones for tea.

(Chorus)
He’s a lumberjack
And he’s OK
He sleeps all night
And he works all day.

I cut down trees
I skip and jump
I like to press wild flowers
I put on women’s clothing
And hang around in bars.

(Mounties)
He cuts down trees
He skips and jumps
He likes to press wild flowers
He put on women’s clothing
And hangs around in bars?

(Chorus)
He’s a lumberjack
And he’s OK
He sleeps all night
And he works all day.

I cut down trees
I wear high heels
Suspendies and a bra
I wish I’d been a girly
Just like my dear pappa.

(Mounties)
He cuts down trees
He wears high heels?
Suspendies… and a bra?

(Chorus)
…He’s a lumberjack
And he’s OK
He sleeps all night
And he works all day.

…He’s a lumberjack
And he’s OK
He sleeps all night
And he works all day.

Depressing songs have the best lyrics.

Mad World:

Quote:
All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world
Mad world

Darren Hayes - Dublin Sky

I've been down a lonely street tonight
And I don't know what's wrong with me
I don't know what's wrong with me
The clouds cover up the Dublin sky
I don't know what's left of me
I don't know what's right with me
And I've tried to keep my distance
And I've sung Amazing Grace
I've tarnished all our memories
But there'll always be a trace of you
Of you

I remember laughing on that river's edge
Trying to get you to jump with me
Trying to get you to fall for me
And your trembling heart it beat so fast
Holdings hands you promised me
Holding hands we counted to three
And I felt your slipping fingers
And I saw you change your mind
If I hadn't dragged you in with me
You would have let me dive without you
Without you

They sent you all the way from Hollywood
And maybe that Dublin sky was changing you
It put diamonds in your eyes
I always thought we were going to make it through
But I wanted to hear it first from you

How many days am I going to regret you?
How many nights till I forget you?
Have I been wasting all those years?
Held down by these tears?
How many dreams have I left deserted?
How many hopes have been diverted?
Have I been buried in the dirt?
Held down by this hurt?

How many loads did I let you hijack?
How many ways can I stand here in playback?
How did I end up lying here
Crying underneath the Dublin sky?

How many days am I going to regret you?
How many nights till I forget you?
Have I been wasting all these years?
Drowning in my tears?

How many nights am I going to regret you?
How many days till I forget you?
Have I been wasting all these years?
Drowning in my tears?

Random Blinking Light

You're beautiful
In an asymmetric kind of way
You're face is not a cliche
And you complicate
In a helpful kind of messed up way
But you have good intentions
You don't care for shiny things
Don't wear a puzzle ring
You're always listening to a sea-shell
There is a tiny light
That no-one else can see
It shines inside of me
Can you feel it?

And now I
I'm sending out my love
I'm calling on the universe
Now I
I radiate the vibe
Can you feel the frequency in this random blinking light?

I'm beautiful
In an ugly kind of ****ed up way
My face is not a cliche
And I complicate
In a disconcering heartfelt way
But I have good intentions
I don't care for shiny things
Don't wear a puzzle ring
I'm always listening to a sea-shell
But you have this tiny light
And no-one else can see
It pulses randomly
And I can feel it

Now I
I'm sending out my love
I'm calling on the universe
Now I
I radiate the vibe
Can you feel the frequency of this random blinking light?
It's so full of love
Beautiful feeling, healing
And I
I radiate the vibe
And I can see this answer to my random blinking light

Making it's way through space and time
Are you recieving signals?
Now I
I radiate both dark and light
Spinning through the universe
Thoughts without a word
Sound I've never heard
Oh, oh
Ooh, you are
Oh, oh

And now I
I'm sending out my love
I'm calling on the universe
Now I
I radiate the vibe
Can you feel this frequency of this random blinking light?
It's so full of love
Beautiful feeling, healing
And I
I radiate the vibe
I have found an answer to my random blinking

Shiny thing
You don't wear a puzzle ring
You're always listening to a sea-shell
There is a thiny light
That no-one else can see

You are, you are
You are, you are
You are pulsing
You radiate

You are, you are
You´re eminate
You are pulsing

We are, we are
We are pulsing
We're emining

We are, you are
We are, we are

Love Song To A Stranger - Joan Baez (one of my favorites of hers)

How long since I've spent a whole night in a twin bed with a stranger
His warm arms all around me?
How long since I've gazed into dark eyes that melted my soul down
To a place where it longs to be?
All of your history has little to do with your face
You're mainly a mystery with violins filling in space

You stood in the nude by the mirror and picked out a rose
From the bouquet in our hotel
And lay down beside me again and I watched the rose
On the pillow where it fell
I sank and I slept in a twilight with only one care
To know that when day broke and I woke that you'd still be there

The hours for once they passed slowly, unendingly by
Like a sweet breeze on a field
Your gentleness came down upon me and I guess I thanked you
When you caused me to yield
We spoke not a sentence and took not a footstep beyond
Our two days together which seemingly soon would be gone

Don't tell me of love everlasting and other sad dreams
I don't want to hear
Just tell me of passionate strangers who rescue each other
From a lifetime of cares
Because if love means forever, expecting nothing returned
Then I hope I'll be given another whole lifetime to learn

Because you gave to me oh so many things it makes me wonder
How they could belong to me
And I gave you only my dark eyes that melted your soul down
To a place where it longs to be

Player One
Written by Machinae supremacy

A misfit to this space
no religion no real place
I grow weary of these walls
so tired of it all

Dull gray and endless days
here where evil has no face
It is hidden from my eyes
unseen or in disguise

Welcome to a world
where you always get the girl
You may lose a fight or two
but you'll win if you get through

Face up and challenge all
you ever knew since you could crawl
Always looking somewhere else
when it's all inside yourself

I wanna play until I die
don't wanna lose my reasons why
I race towards the sky
in a world that never ends

I keep coming back for more
coming back until I score
always stronger than before
in a world that never ends

now I feel like that again!

Tomorrow I will be here,
and I won't be the only one.
Our dreams will always adhere
to a world beyond this one

Eels - Things the Grandchildren Should Know

I go to bed real early
Everybody thinks it's strange
I get up early in the morning
No matter how disappointed I was
With the day before
It feels new

I don't leave the house much
I don't like being around people
Makes me nervous and weird
I don't like going to shows either
It's better for me to stay home
Some might think it means I hate people
But that's not quite right

I do some stupid things
But my heart's in the right place
And this i know

I got a dog
I take him for a walk
And all the people like to say hello
I'm used to staring down at the sidewalk cracks
I'm learning how to say hello
Without too much trouble

I'm turning out just like my father
Though I swore I never would
Now I can say that I have love for him
I never really understood
What it must have been like for him
Living inside his head

I feel like he's here with me now
Even though he's dead

It's not all good and it's not all bad
Don't believe everything you read
I'm the only one who knows what it's like
So I thought I'd better tell you
Before I leave

So in the end i'd like to say
That i'm a very thankful man
I tried to make the most of my situations
And enjoy what I had
I knew true love and I knew passion
And the difference between the two
And I had some regrets
But if i had to do it all again
Well, it's something i'd like to do

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye

The Kinks — Lola, ironically ten times funnier than Weird Al's woeful parody.

I met her in a club down in old soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola
C-O-L-A cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said "Lola"
L-O-L-A Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola

Well I’m not the world’s most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Well I’m not dumb but I can’t understand
Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man
Oh my Lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola

Well we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said dear boy won’t you come home with me
Well I’m not the world’s most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes well I almost fell for my Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola
Lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Then I looked at her and she at me

Well that’s the way that I want it to stay
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It’s a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo lola

Well I left home just a week before
And I’d never ever kissed a woman before
But lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said "Dear boy I’m gonna make you a man"

Well I’m not the world’s most masculine man
But I know what I am and I’m glad I’m a man
And so is Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola

If it's a Futurama reference then it's not worth getting.

Everyone thinks they're such sweet little things.

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

Soft downy feathers and nice little wings.

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

But there's a poison I'd like to administer: You think they're cuddly, but I think they're sinister.

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!
DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

What are they doing at night in the park?

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

Think of them waddling about in the dark.

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

Sneering and whispering and stealing your cars! Reading Pornography, smoking cigars!

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!
DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

(...)

Forcing old ladies to throw them some bread.

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

Who could deny? They'd be better off dead!

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

Look closer and you may recoil in surprise, at web-footed fascists with mad little eyes.

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

If they hadn't done anything wrong, then people wouldn't keep shooting 'em!

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!

DUCKS! DUCKS! - Quack Quack! Quack Quack!
