I feel with you - your last sentence there really summarises it well. I don't know much about Dahmer, either, though for different reasons, mostly pure laziness. James Maker (who wrote that song, at least in parts) essentially did all the research I'll never do

Hmm. I'd like to post the lyrics, but there's other music distracting my mental musicscape, so that doesn't work; and my text file with the lyrics is apparently on my other computer. Dayum.

I just spent 40 minutes reading the Dahmer article. I didnt know he killed that many people. It said a person a week.

Wow! Why are all of the crazys sexualy motivated. It amazes me what sexual desire often leads to.

Crazy about that Asian boy huh? He could have been saved. He should have been saved.

There was a movie made specifically about the life of Ed Gein a few years ago, but I don't think it got a theatrical release.
The people of the town in Wisconsin near where Gein lived weren't at all happy about this movie being made, and they tried to block it's release.

I beg to differ. At about the same time as the 1893 World's Fair, a man named Henry H. Holmes, whose real name was Herman W. Mudgett, was active in Chicago. He custom built a block square building, with gas nozzles in rooms (no not Xyklon B) and a crematorium in the basement. He is considered America's first serial killer.

While you may quibble about the five year difference, I believe that the remains of over 200 people found in the rubble of his burned down building (not killed in the fire) say that ol' Hermie owns Jack the Ripper like a pimp owns a two dollar whore.

But maybe that's just me.

Right. I've read a little bit about this Holmes guy. It was particularly disturbing. He was essentially a walking slaughtering factory.

tempsie, I highly recommend you do some research before postulating. Jack The Ripper may be romanticized like hell by tons of people (including perhaps you), but his crimes are nothing compared to the horrors committed by such infamous monsters like Elisabeth Bathory, Vlade Tepes (Vlad the Impaler), Andrei Chikatilo, and Genene Jones (who was a pediatric nurse who took over the care of babies and murdered them by injecting one after another with poison).

I don't really think the point is "romanticising", or whatever. The point, I find, it more that it's not been figured out. No one knows who the guy was. Call it the first prominent series of murders without a face. The other things thus far mentioned are all mentioned by name. That, alone, says something. Of course the crimes aren't "spectacular". But that's really not the point (IMO, at least).

Exactly. Also, Jack the Ripper was one of the first sexual serial killers. Like, he was cutting up the privates of these prostitutes. It got worse every time. He removed the breasts of his fifth victim and did God knows what to her other regions but the pics are disgusting. Also, read about his third and fourth murders sometime. Committed on the same night in completely different parts of the city, taunting the police with a message on the wall between the two sites, and they couldn't find him. Believe me, it's pretty odd and worth the infamy.

And who's to say Jack The Ripper (and numerous other "at large" serial killers) didn't die under completely unrelated circumstances before being caught? A heart attack, a house fire, getting run over in the street, and any number of other unfortunate things claim lives every day without differentiating between the relative good or evil of their victims.

I stumbled across Holmes in some fashion that I entirely forget now, but I agree. He does pwn the Ripper. There's a fascinating book about Holmes and the World's Fair called "Devil in the White City." I definitely suggest anyone interested in crime checks it out.

I'm in the middle of it, right now. Excellent book.
