Default Using photos to make games

Well I'm not much of an artist, so while I was doing a research article on this abandoned asylum, I thought to myself it might be quite interesting to use photos to make a game.

Has anyone done this before? Any advice? Is there any pitfalls to doing this?

Never done it, but actually tried it once. First of all you'll be needing a lot of pictures taken from all the directions you can go to, all the objects to look at... If something changes in a scene, you will have to take some more pictures or use a photo-editing program. All the pictures have to be taken from the same point of view, so your camera is not supposed to move a lot.

(unless you go for the weird approach that is )

These are just a few of the problems I encountered...

If you use pictures from another source (say for detailed backgrounds) you'll need permission from the owner of the photos or you'll run into copyright issues.

You know, I once had an idea to do an adventure game with little people (like liliputans) living in the "big man's world" that uses photographs as backgrounds. The advantage to doing this is, you will need to be photographing a relatively small area for the little person to be active in. And that means you can set the scene up any way you want to. You know how graphic adventure games usually have a bunch of little details on screen? Well, you can organize a bunch of toys on the floor of a children's room, arrange garbage in such a way to look visually appealing (I know that's hard ) etc. I think it's possible. It's not an idea I acted upon though. It would probably be good if you have a digital camera, so you can later add some more things to the photos in a photoshop type program, like coat them with a certain tinge of color, fix the lighting, or whatever.

You're assuming he's going to make a 1st person adventure, but you can also make a 3rd person game with photo's of course.

I think that's the first time I've seen hand-drawn characters sit well on photos. I didn't think that I would, but I like that graphical style.

Sounds pretty interesting, and pretty achievable. I'm not sure whether I'm aiming for 1st or 3rd person, although I'd probably start with 3rd person until I learn a bit more programming skills (anyone know a good program to make a 1st person adventure?).

Lighting will probably be the most difficult issue, daytime will be simple but nighttime scenes will require some editing.

Thanks! I'll finish it first in German and maybe there will follow an English version.
