Default What type of scene or location defines an adventure game for you?

Generally speaking, what's the the first thing in terms of locations that comes to your mind when speaking about the genre? You can also name some specific locations in games.

As for me, one of the first association are those scenes taking place in the back alley, behind the kitchen windows, street behind some sort of restaurant etc... Somehow, they always carry some sort of danger, mystery and secret exploration, spying, sneaking in or running away. A must-do stereotypes here are trash bin of course, and fresh pie at the window counter.

The specific scenes that comes to mind are for example those at the back of hotel in Broken Sword or kitchen window at the Scabb Island.

Runaway 3 also features a great deal of back alleys.

A temple, definitely a temple. Doesn't really matter if it's Egyptian, Aztec or Greek in orgin as long as there are lots of traps and creepy priest guys, perhaps with a sacrifice?

I think docking bays, shores, river banks, that sort of thing always strikes a chord. Anything wet, rainy and dark.

Cluttered locations. Like this great selection here:

A lot of scenes from Secret Files: Tunguska seem to fit here (IMO). Old Stevies Pub:

or even this one, especially with those signals in the top left swaying in the cool breeze:

I tried to find an image from the wharf where the guy is fishing right below 'Old Stevies Pub' but I couldn't find one, that scene was perfect.

I'm very fond of vibrant and exotic locations in adventure games and also of old and historic sites and architecture. But I equally like (maybe even more) the more contemporary settings, but there has to be an atmosphere tied to it. Both dark and light auras does it for me. For instance, I enjoy walking the creepy woods and mansions in the fall, as in the "Black Mirror III" which I'm currently playing, but also a sunny day on the sea or in a desert, like in "Runaway", "Monkey Island" or Broken Sword".

When I think of locations, I think of churches. Pretty much any non-comedic adventure game has a church you have to investigate at some point. The Lost Crown had not one but two churches you had to visit, that's how prevalent they can be.

I love the choices and screen shots. I have found myself out and about and looked at a place and thought "that looks like it belongs in an adventure game!"

(of course it's morning and I can't think of any specific examples.)

All the selections here are great examples. I have very fond memories of many locations in Gabriel Knight, especially the bookshop. Also love the little areas around Machinarium.

Great topic by the way!

For me - forests. All kinds of forests. Big forests, small forests, rainforests, city forests, jungles, parks. Anywhere there are trees and lots of them.

For some reason, for me it's always the place where the main character is supposed to live, or go to sleep at the end of the day. I think it's because it makes me feel like it's home away from home.
For example, the screenshot from GK1 posted above is adjacent to Gabriel's bedroom. Or Harbour Cottage in The Lost Crown.

Places with lots of history , legends, and rumors.
Ancient temples, ruins, catacombs, castles, monuments (ancient buildings in general)
And in another line, jungles, empty beaches, etc.

I'm going to have to agree with museums and libraries, because that's where you find out all of the information! My favorite is Saxton Museum, of course.

I really want to answer this question, but I don't know how to without writing a grocery list of every great location I've ever visited in a game.

I just really love when it takes almost no effort at all to get completely sucked into the scenery. Grand architecture, dirt paths, rolling fields, cobblestone streets, forests and streams, dingy offices, sinister train cars, modern apartments, you name it, I love it, and the more the better. I have a theory that you could really pretty much sell me any game that makes me think I'm walking around (NOT running! If I'm running, I'm not enjoying the scenery. Might be a great sequence, but a waste of great scenery) in some place I have never (and probably never will) walked through before. I especially love interesting historical settings that don't exist anymore. Man, does that ever get my imagination flowing.
