Excellent deal. I've been putting off getting the special edition and this is a great chance.
I've also been wanting to play The Dig for some time.

http://www.telltalegames.com/playlikeapirate

Telltale is offering episode one of Tales of Monkey Island for FREE for one day only (September 19) to commemorate Talk Like A Pirate Day.

With the sale mentioned above, you could get a a whole lot of adventure gaming goodness for relatively little money.

The Special Edition has new high resolution art, new voice recordings, and re-orchestrated music featuring live musicians, among other things. And yes, the original game is also included. In fact, you can switch to it on the fly at any point during gameplay.

Not to be a glass half empty guy, but this concerns me that it could be an indication that these games aren't selling on Steam - which might mean less of a chance of seeing other games re-released and or Special Editionisized.

Adventure games are a niche market but selling them (at reduced prices) is a great way to get a high adoption rate of people who (a) haven't played the game before, (b) played it and now want to play it again, or (c) own the game but want to avoid some of the emulation technicalities so they would just rather purchase it through Steam.

I won't be surprised if we see a SE of Monkey 2, but any other Lucasarts games are in the sit and wait category.

Just a reminder, today (Saturday) is the last day to download Tales of Monkey Island, ep 1 for free.

No, the remake is simply called "The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition".

EDIT: Now with a more precise quote.

And it will not work on any system with a CPU that doesn't support SSE2 architecture.

Albeit it might work on a crappy old Intel 1.5 Gig CPU with SSE2 support.

SSE2 means a P4 or better, which is not really an unreasonable spec in 2009, given that the P4 came to market in 2000

No, SSE2 has been introduced by Intel in 2001. AMD started implementing SSE2 in their Athlon 64 CPUs in 2003.

However the question about reason is rather does Monkey Island SE, an 2D/2.5D adventure, needs the SSE2 architecture at all?

To be honest the answer is nope, it does not need SSE2.

...and my point is that if your computer is sub-P4, I don't think you can reasonably complain about new games not supporting your system in 2009 (going on 2010). It's probably time to buy a new system or a console.

I would approve your point if the game, itself, really justifies the need for an P4 equivalent CPU. But that is simply not the case. SSE2 is not necessary for the programming structure of this particular game.

Furthermore LA tricks people into believing this 'new game' needs high end technologies just because it's 'new'. So, I wouldn't even consider to upgrade my CPU just because of this particular game. Simply out of question.
