Adaptations of Celtic tales?
For a project for school, I'd like to find a game that's an adaptation of an ancient Celtic, Irish, or Welsh myth or folktale. Not a pastiche or a game dropping references or harnessing a "feel", but a retelling of the tale itself. It doesn't have to be an adventure game, or even a good adaptation, though those are preferable. I've been checking around various sites, but I can't find anything directly on point, and games with Celtic contexts aren't terribly common to begin with. Can anyone give me a hand?

We recently had a blog post about a couple of old games based on some Irish Celtic mythology. There's a link in the blog post that has a link to the game itself. I haven't played it myself, so I don't know if it's a retelling or not but it'll hopefully get you started.

Welsh Mythology
Mel68, isn't there a game coming up that's based on the Mabinogion? That's the collection of Welsh mythology, I think.

You're absolutely right. I had forgotten that one. It's called Rhiannon - Beyond the Mabinogion. Here's the news item we have on it (which contains a link to the official website).
Thanks. |

In Beyond Atlantis (Atlantis II) there is a segment that deals with a medieval Ireland, and a character travels back to the 'blue people'. I can't recall the name of the tribe, but Ailill is their old King, Aine is a goddess.
There's another game that's kinda hard to come by called Celtica. Cameron Files: Loch Ness deals with a Banshee, but not too much else in Scottish history/mythology. I don't know of any that deal with Welsh mythology, though. FGM

The Sierra game The Black Cauldron (Al Lowe's first game, incidentally) is based on the Disney movie that was based on the books by Lloyd Alexander, which in turn are based on/inspired by Welsh mythology. You can't get much authentic than that!
... I can't really help you, I guess.

You are all forgetting a pretty recent release.

Nah, none of that will work. I need a direct adaptation, as in an old story rather then new.
Ah, well, no big deal. I have another project coming up that will be able to make use of these. Thanks for your help. |

Does anyone remember "Cuchulain"? It run on the Sinclair Spectrum (at least), and was supposed to be the ultimate game experience (back in '84 or so, that is).

Oh God, the memories. I must have been thinking about Tir-na-nog, but my friends and I called it Cuchulain for some reason (we also pronounced as read in Spanish: Koo-tchoo-lah-een.) I didn't realize the blog was about games so old, thanks for bringing that back.

The blog is about games old and new and in between and adventure gaming topics in general.
It's kind of funny you mentioned that character/game when we just had a blog about it. |

The Omega Stone incorporates an intensive look at Stonhenge; next best thing to being there.

Of course, Arthurian legends are somewhat celtic and there's plenty of games about those. Also, the Freeware A Tale of Two Kingdoms (review in Underground soon) has lots of references to celtic mythology. Also, there's the upcoming Beowulf game of the film although that's not really celtic.
