Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls was pretty scary --- to me at least. (it does work in win xp in windows NT comp. mode).
I haven't played Phantasmagoria or Sanitarium or the Blackstone Chronicles, but I would love to one day If you can find it, you really should try: I have no mouth and I must scream. Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit?? too?? maybe?? |

'Noctropolis' is a bit of a creepy game. Fairly old though. I don't know how others rate it but I thought it was quite good.

I wouldn't call Noctropolis a creepy game at all , it had a great atmosphere , a bit dark perhaps and very beautiful gothic art for the backgrounds but it was a superhero graphic adventure game. (though the hero is kind of lame)

Yeah, it wasn't a 'scary' game. Just some bits were a bit creepy like:

All can be downloaded for free from the writer's website. You can also make a fairly small donation to show your appreciation and get "deluxe" editions (with DVD like extras and other small enhancements) if you so desire. If you are going to play these then it is recommended that you play them in order. There were also some mini text adventures between the third and fourth games that are worth checking out if you want the full experience (downloadable from the page for the fourth game).

Inherent Evil
Blackstone Chronicles Nothing creepier than being in an abandoned hotel/insane asylum for my money. |

Well, I'll go ahead and add
SILENT HILL 2 to that list. It works as an adventure game, really. With combat on easy, the only difference is that deaths are not scripted; they are entirely your fault. And besides that, its almost impossible to die on easy mode. Come for the atmosphere, stay for the story.
