Default A good creepy adventure game.

I'm looking for a creepy/scary adventure game, the last good one I played was stractches I liked it but it seem'd kinda short, and I just got Amber journeys beyond.

By the way, I found out how you can run amber on XP, you can use virtual PC and there's a tutrioal which shows you how to do it here.

http://www.quandaryland.com/jsp/disp...4+FAQ#Download

on the site it lists amber as one of the games you can run on XP with Vpc. I havent tried it yet because I feel pretty lazay at the moment.

Anyways, I've played amber before so I pretty much already had the expereince with it. So if you have any reccomendations please post them

Of the more recent games I also like Penumbra: Overture Episode One. Yeah, that one will be short though. Amber was pretty decent and I liked the Darkfall series too.

Welcome to the forums.

Have a look at this game recommendations thread which has a couple of links to threads about games you're interested in.

A game that is similar (and might be about the same length) is Barrow Hill. I had a great time with that one.

If you don't mind old old games , i can recommend

The Legacy : Realm of Terror , good atmosphere but quite tough and the multiple windows can be a pain and the interface is clumsy. Probably freeware by now since the company closed down years ago. If you don't mind the old blocky graphics , it's worth a look.

Realm of the Haunting was also very good , a mixture of 3d shooter & adventure but it's nevertheless , a rather unique game that has a good atmosphere but like legacy , it has old blocky graphics.

Yeah, I have this just sitting in the CD rack. Wish I could get it to run worth a darn. When I do get it to run it just leaves graphic artifact trails. Fantastic for it's time.

Well another creepy action/adventure game is Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. It's 3D but it's not really a "shooter" but there is some emphasis on surviving using a gun. Basically, runnning and gunning will get you killed for sure. Worth checking out and doesn't really require a monster computer setup to run it either.

Call of Cthulhu is a pretty creepy and actually very good game.

You should also read the short story

Other recommendations:

- I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream
- Phantasmagoria I & II
- Darkseed I & II
- Alone In The Dark Series (if you can get it to work)

Edit: Really great & creepy non-adventure games: Clive Barker's Undying, System Shock 2

I think this guide on the unofficial realm of the haunting website teaches you how to install it properly on XP or vista using dosbox.

I'd suggest Phantasmagoria I, though that's sometimes more gory than creepy.

For great, creepy, non-adventure games I strongly suggest the Thief series.

The Phantasmagoria series relies a bit more on gore than actual creepiness. I loved the music in the game though.

The Gabriel Knight games are pretty scary at times, especially the second one, The Beast Within.

For non-adventure: The Project Zero/Fatal Frame games.

Dark Fall
Definitely the creepiest game I've played.

Yeah, Clive Barker's Undying isn't an adventure game, but I got it anyway because the story and setting looked so creepy. I totally suck at action games, so I spent a large part of the game in god mode just blasting my way through, and still loved it because the atmosphere and the story were so compelling. I've replayed it several times when craving a scary game.

I thought Sanitarium was pretty creepy in parts ... but then, I'm very easily scared! Still Life gave me nightmares, so I'd also count that as a scary game, but that might just be because of the quality of the art that depicts the murder scenes.

Thanks. I've always had problems when I kicked in the SVGA graphics though, it was like moving through a bad headtrip.

I just started playing this again. It's awesome but it's more survival horror... I think. Towards the end it does get hectic with having to be able to cast spells and shoot enemies at the same time. It was awesome.

I wanted to expound on Dark Fall. The first time I played it, I was creeped out to all hell; as in, "turn the damn lights on!!!" levels of creepiness. Like a fool, I played alone and took no notes.

After realizing my no-note-taking folly, I enlisted my brave and intrepid wife to help. Sitting immediately behind me with a notepad, she was very possibly as scared as I was. Some of the things I had seen IMMEDIATELY BEFORE (as in, only a day or two) were just as scary, if not more. That game builds atmosphere and dread like no other I've ever seen. Truly frightening, in a completely pervasive psychological way.

So my recommendation: get Dark Fall, make sure to take notes, enlist help if necessary, and bring a spare change of underwear.

I recently finished Dark Fall 2: Lights Out. It was creepy and mysterious. Moving around in this game was frustrating and it could have used better story telling techniques to wrap it up. Nonetheless, I found it to be a game well worth playing for the puzzles, art, music, and nice creepy feeling.

Sanitarium has a nice, sad, creepiness to it.
