Default Telltale gets 6 million dollars in funding

I just saw on Slasdot (of all places) that Telltale will get USD 6 million in funding from a venture capitalist. It seems like the adventure game genre is really getting back to life now. The blurp is very short, but I thought I'd share it with you anyway.

Every time I read this news I imagine it the following way:

TellTale Games is pleased to announce it has acquired venture capital investment for future projects in the amount of...

(MEGA ZOOM-IN)

SIX MILLION DOLLARS!

Does this mean that we will see the next installment of Bone within the next decade or so?

Enough to buy the "Monkey Island" rights and to convince Ron Gilbert that playing "World Of Warcraft" is an utter waste of time and... okokok.

Still woot, that's a bit of money! That's six million dollars plus the three millions in transfer sums they received when they let Squinky go (fools)! Seriously, good news. Depending on what they'll be doing with that bucketload of money next.

Cool, more money for the good guys, I guess.

I hope Telltale will finish the Bone series soon, and I also hope that Jeff Smith is ok with the situation that Bone has been postponed for quite a while now.

CSI, Sam'n Max Season 2, maybe a completely new project idea and the rest of the Bone episodes. Now that's a bright future for Telltale even though I couldn't care less for CSI.

How much does it usually cost to buy a IP?

Depends on the IP I would guess. i.e buying "Lost" might be more expensive than "The Fall Guy".

I certainly hope they ressurect Bone and lay off the CSI games. (Although the CSI games probably make more money for them with the unwashed masses).

Maye even develop their own IP.

Erm, I enjoyed the CSI games more than the Bone games so far. Although Sam & Max is miles ahead of Bone. I'm loving the fact its coming to the Wii.

How much do you guys think Monkey Island IP would cost? Surely it can't be that much because its not as big as something like Starwars.

I agree. Bone The Great Cow Race was pretty good fun, but CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder was a great game. I can't wait for Hard Evidence.

Propably over 10 million, Lucasarts wouldn't give away any IP rights to anyone ever. Why would they? Someone could make huge piles of money and Lucasarts would then end up losing in the deal.

And they have no need to sell anything, they have G.L.'s billions behind them. They can just sit on all the unused IP's and laugh at the poor ag fanatics.

Sam'n Max they did lose yes, but only because Purcell owned the rights and Lucasarts was only renting the IP rights from him.

Monkey Island is the cornerstone of the original Lucas Arts and Films. Considering the fact that George makes 35 million + a year in residual alone on his games I can't imagine him letting it go unless he truley cares about the franchise continuing the way it deserves to be and I don't believe George gives a lick about anything but success and money so that might be out.

If he was to walk away from it I can't imagine it going for anything less than 10 million dollars. LA may give it up for less if the company agrees to a third party buyout but I guarantee TT would want Lucas hovering over the MI project. Third party buyout makes the most sense so LA can still have it's ego in check and see their trademark along with TT.

Good point. I think no holder in their right state of mind would let go of succesful intellectual properties just like that. That just wouldn't make sense, no matter how badly dedicated fans are demanding one more sequel ASAP. There are MANY once big, fat and mighty properties not being used for anything at this point in time. Just think of these: Ultima®, Wing Commander®, System Shock®, yaddayadda®, James Pond® ( ;-) ) and so on and so on. Hmkay, now about IPs possibly worth six million dollars...
