Am I the only one who was always sort of bummed that you couldn't go in to Chessboard Land?

Peace & Luv, Liz

I think you'll be able to do it in the unofficial amateur sequel, King Quest IX.

I always wanted to go in so bad. But what could be in there? More chess board hills?

Maybe the real fun of Chess Board land is imagining what it's like, let's never enter

Try the Tierra remakes of King Quest 1 and 2.
They're free, and excellent (especially the second one).

Great games. I think chessboard land was one of the most memorable and magical places I have ever visited in an adventure. Their were lots of great screens in KQ6 but thta was just spectacular.

Is it true that Mananan(spelling?), the wizard who kept Alexander prisoner in KQ3, shows up in Kings Quest 6?
Maybe i should get off my ass and actually play the game, i´ve got it standing on my bookcase collecting dust.

I he doesn't show up, but I think I remember a letter sent to the Vizier.

Also, since I played this game I've been calling Yoda a "dangling participle" (or translated to german "baumelndes Partizip", even though that term doesn't exist in german in this way).

An evil game! Lots of nice ideas, but so many ways to make the game impossible!

I just hate adventure games that kill you because you forgot something, and then you have to revert to saves. Sierra was infamous for that, and I guess was the reason why I was always an LA fan at heart.

You mean like
Spoiler:
when you have to put a brick in the labyrinth cogs. Because the skull just cracks. And that brick, that would be the one from a completely different island, right? The one that's just lying on the ground? Silly me for forgetting to pick that up ...

Exactly or like in Gabriel Knight: Sins of the fathers
Spoiler:
you the end of it where you are at the hounfour. You need to tell Mosely you are there so you slip a tracking device under the hounfour entrance. But that's not enough, you also need to slip a stick under the hounfour entrance as well, so he can use it to trigger the elevator. If you forget to do that, the game moves along till the very end where you reach a stage where you die every single time, because Mosely is not there.

KQ6 was the worst when it comes to those puzzles. The first time I played I had to go and leave the labrynth 3 times.

He shows up in KQ5, actually.

Do what Ninth suggested and play the AGDI remakes. They're free downloads. If you like them, you can find the rest of the games fairly easily on eBay (cheaper if you buy them individually than as a collection). KQ5 and KQ6 on CD sell pretty cheap, especially if you don't care about getting a box. (They sometimes don't come with the copy protection but you can find that online, or people here [like me ] can help out with that.)

There are rumors that Vivendi will be releasing a new KQ compilation in October, but they haven't officially confirmed it.

I actually disagree on the two puzzles in GK1 and KQ6 being similarly unfair. The one in KQ6 definitely was. I mean, Alexander could have found the necessary item anywhere, especially in the catacombs. But in GK1 it was all actually logical, and the game gave ample warning that you had to do something at that point.

That doesn't prevent me from loving KQ6 anyway.

I'm sure Roberta Williams intended for him to return in KQ9. Here's my theory :

Spoiler:
Alexander returns to Mordack's castle, opens the bag, and out jumps Mannanan. Alex goes on his usual business, such as kicking him down the stairs and throwing his hair in bowls of porridge, but as he prepairs to leave the castle, Dink reveals the terrible truth: Mannanan has actually died at the end of KQ5, stuck in a bag that could only be opened from the outside, after having meowed himself hoarse --- but there was nobody in the castle to hear him. A shiver then runs down Alexander's spine, who refuses to speak of Mannanan again, and that's the last we hear of him.

Or am I mixing things up?
Well, that's Ninth's fault. I've got terrible images flying through my head now and I can't think straight.

Yeah, I'm really psyched at getting to go in to Chessboard Land in KQIX.

I was pretty bummed when I first played KQ6, though. I remember the conversation I had with a friend of mine...

"I've done this, this, and this so far, but I haven't figured out how to get into Chessboard Land yet."
"You don't."
"You don't go into Chessboard Land?!"
"No, sorry."
"Well, that just sucks!"

I'm just incredibly nosy and curious that way!

And I agree, the catacombs dead-end in KQ6 kinda sucked, especially considering that they went to a lot of great lengths to cover a fair number of alternate ways of doing/missing things.

They should have just made it so that the Winged Ones' rulers didn't let you in unless you had everything... as it stands they'll let you you the first time you visit them without everything you need, but the second time you go they won't, even if you're still missing something.

Peace & Luv, Liz

The remakes of KQ 1 and 2 are pretty good, but i think the originals are way better.

Hope you are right about the KQ compilation.
It would be awesome to see all the KQ games being released again.
