Default Broken Sword 1 - Play with no CD?

hi all

just decided to play broken sword; shadow of the templars again after many years, and lo and behold it installed fine on my xp set up!

nevertheless, i have a very noisy cd rom drive (am replacing soonish), and was wondering if there is a way of copying the contents of the cd 1 onto the hard drive, so that i dont have to insert the cd, as its spoiling the enjoyment at the moment.

any techie experts out there?

thanks

Welcome to the forum.

I'm going to transfer your question into our tech forum. Someone there may have a suggestion.

Just play it with SCUMMVM, that should do the trick.

I just moved your post out of the Adventure forum and into this one. People ask all sorts of technical questions here... some problems, some just questions.

I hope SCUMMVM allows you to play the game without the CD. Post back here if you have trouble getting it to work and someone will probably be able to help.

Make sure you also download the Broken Sword 1 cutscene pack (in the Extras section of the download page), if you want to be able to see those while playing.

thanks: i can see how scumm will do the trick, although there are a few hundred mbs of sound and music on the cd that will be redundant?... (if i dont want to use cd)

There are no audio tracks on Broken Sword games, if that's what you mean.
Just copy content of both discs into a single folder, download cutscene pack as artwking4 suggested. Point ScummVM to the folder, play, enjoy.

Sorry sir I've done almost all ok but I can't be able to see cinematics (for example the first one when the clown put the bomb into the bar....).
The game starts immediately with George speaking.....

Copy and paste the videos from the zip file into the 'video' folder which is in the main game folder.

There is no video folder. There are Clusters, Saves, Smackshi folders. Is it one of these?

Ah, well in that case what you can do is make a folder called 'video' in the main game folder. Copy and paste the compressed videos you've downloaded into this folder. Load up ScummVM, with Broken Sword selected from the list, click on 'Edit Game', click on 'Paths', then 'Extra Path' and find the 'video' folder and click on 'Choose'.

See what happens.

I've already created a folder called "Cinematics", I've done exactly what you told but the game still starts with George Speaking. No intro video.

The file you've downloaded from ScummVM.org (Sword1_cutscenes.zip) contains all the movie files in a subfolder called "video". Just extract the zip file into the folder where you've installed Broken Sword 1 so that there should now be "clusters, saves, smackshi and video" folders present, with all the movies you downloaded in the "video" folder. The game should then work with videos.

In terms of redundant files; the "smackshi" folder contains the original movie files that come with the game. You do not need these as ScummVM cannot play them (thats why you've downloaded the re-encoded movie files from ScummVM), so you can delete the contents of this folder to save space if you want to.

Ah yeah, you need to extract the English file first (Sword1_cutscenes.zip) for the videos themselves and then the italian file (Sword1_Cutscenes_ITA_AddOn.zip) afterwards for the correct italian cutscene speech and subtitles. The contents of both files go into the "video" folder, which should have no subfolders in it. Hope it works for you
