Anyone use and external hard drive?

My friend got one and she knows less about computers than me [I know how to turn a computer on and very very basic things] I plugged it all in and the computer is reading the device , I have looked at the device manager and it is in there.But I dont know how you access it to transfer files [basicaly I dont know how it works, do you keep it on all the time do you only transfer files ARRGGHHH].
please please help me.

Just go into my computer, and it should show the drive. Double click it to open, and create folders as usual. Copy and paste anything you want to transfer.
