Default New laptop shows images in real 3D

Did anybody see this article on Wired (or wherever else it might have appeared)?

Quote:
Users won't need special glasses to view the three-dimensional images that pop up from Sharp's new Mebius PC-RD3D laptop, billed as the world's first 3-D laptop.

The new laptop is mostly targeted for people who design three-dimensional software, but Sharp is also planning a model for average consumers, a company representative said. Tokyo-based Sharp has been selling cell phones with 3-D displays for NTT DoCoMo, Japan's top mobile carrier, since last year.

The computer display produces 3-D images by sending a slightly different image to the right eye and the left eye at once by bending them in different angles, Sharp reports. The special screen has applications in architecture, medicine, science and gaming. The $3,000 laptop switches back and forth between its 3-D feature and a regular display by a push of a button. Sales will begin in Japan.
No word on whether the software would have to be compatible, but the implications are impressive. Just imagine playing your favorite first-person 3D game with that computer. It might be closer to virtual reality than any VR programs have ever achieved! Oh, and there's that science and medicine thing, too. And if all else fails, it could increase demand for your favorite headache relief medication.

I'd like to see a video of that. Until then I'm going to be very skeptical.

It has potential though. You don't have to wear silly glasses, or even a full-fledged helmet. You won't need a CAVE installed in your home. It's just like working from a screen with just a little bit of extra dimension. If the image doesn't give you a headache (which most 3d cinemas do after 2 hours) it might sell. Then again, the added effect must be sufficiently impressive to bother with it.

Hmm. VR sucks. Though we can always keep dreaming of total immediation.

Well, it's not much, but:

I'm sure it would be much more convincing viewed on the actual 3D screen. And apparently, this computer is only going to cost about 1/6 more than a comparable 2D-only laptop, about US$3,000. Not bad. Not in my budget at the moment, but still, not bad.

Apparently the technology's been in use in cellphones in Japan for a few years now.

I heard that in Japan, all cars are driven by Dance Dance Revolution mats that control the vehicle. You must dance perfectly to parallel park!

Oh wait. I dreamt that.
