Default Open sourced action/adventure game engine

A Finnish company that was developing a 3rd person action/adventure game has gone bankrupt and closed it's offices. Before they did, they decided to release all their source code and (early) data as open source.

Quote:
Game development company Cat Mother Ltd. (www.catmother.com) has now closed its offices, but in their last meeting the company board decided to publish all company source code as open source. Also large part of the content is published. Published material includes fully playable prototype of a 3rd person action/adventure game and commercial quality in-house 3D-engine (C++/DirectX9). The source code is published under BSD license and the content is published under GPL license. All material can be downloaded from catmother.sourceforge.net.

This could potentially be very interesting, depending on who out there picks it up and what they do with it. It certainly would save a big job for people interested in making 3D games.

Wow, interesting stuff. I'll be sure to check out the tech demo once I get home.

To say that the tech demo was disappointing would be the biggest understatement in the history of statements. And it's not like I was hyped for the thing, either. So, the thing ran like shit, was all gray, and had sprite-problems all around. So, yeah, disappointing, but hey it's not like I payed anything for that.

Hehe, nobody said it would be the wonder of the world. I haven't even tested it yet.

Heh, true, true. But I was expecting it to at least run.

That's what you get for boasting about how great your graphics card will be for HL2...

...ok, so being unable to run this thing isn't much of a disadvantage! It does show some promise, but it performs extremely badly and doesn't even look that great! With a bit of work you could probably squeeze a half-decent game out of it, but then the same is true of the open-sourced Quake 2 engine. Probably.

Well, remember that it's not a finished product after all.

Even if the engine isn't the best ever to see the light of day, I think that it was good of them to give out the source code instead of just letting it die with the rest of the company. Now, someone who wishes to do so can have a look at it and improve it.
