Getting a DS. Now I need games.
I decided to finally buy a DS Lite. Because I haven't really followed gaming news, I'll need suggestions for games to buy--any genre works. What I'm already planning on buying:
Yoshi's Island DS Magical Starsign Castlevania (not sure which of the two) Advance Wars Elite Beat Agents Zelda: Phantom Hourglass |

Since you are in an adventure site, the obvious recommendations are:
Phoenix wright 1 &2 Hotel Dusk Trace Memory If you like Sudoku you can get addicted to Picross DS.

Dragon Quest Heroes Rocket Slime - my all time favourite. Sequel is out soon!
Age Of Empires 3: The Age of Kings (if you like advance wars, also, a-wars ds2 is on the near horizon) Dawn of Sorrow is supposedly the better castlevania, I found them both too hard :p Freshly Picked - Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland - this is love/hate stuff, check it out properly to see if its for you. Etrian Odyssey - very basic (very hard) roguelike, I love it Luminous Arc- is worth it if you enjoy tactics ogre like games. Mario & Luigi - Partners in Time (the mario rpg). Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2 - an english language version is out soon. Its the sequal to the game Elite Beat Agents is modelled after. If you get Pheonix Wright 1/2, may as well get 3 now, it has english translation already rather than wait for the english box release. Perl and Diamond are a fine pokemon game. Touch Detective (and new sequel) Operation Vietnam (if the subject matter doesn't offend its a tight little game) Donkey Kong Jungle Climber is a fun platformer, as is new super mario brothers. |

I am thinking of buying a DS myself and went looking for the games you mentioned. But I couldn't find the "Trace Memory"! It was pure luck I stumpled upon it under another name: Another Code: Two memories I'm not so sure I like what I read of Phoenix Wright... sounds too much of a laywer story to me, lol.

Advance Wars DS wasn't as good as the GBA AW games, so maybe you should hold out for Advance Wars DS2, see if that turns out to be better.

Whatever AWDS was awesome. I haven't played the GBA versions, but if you haven't then you can't go wrong with AWDS.
Phoenix Wright (all of them) Mario Kart DS Picross DS Super Mario 64 DS New Super Mario Bros. Glory Days 2 Metroid Prime: Hunters (still fun, even if it's not genuine Metroid) Ouendan games (the Japanese games EBA is based off) Hotel Dusk Age of Empires Anno 1701 (Europe only) For GBA: Metroid Zero Mission Metroid Fusion Legend of Zelda - Minish Cap bit Generations series (Japan only, but in particular Dotstream and Orbital are loads of fun and the menus are in English)

I'll second the Phoenix Wright 1 & 2, but I heard the English translation on the Japanese release of 3 is a bit iffy so you might want to wait for that one till it comes out in the west with a new translation.
Also agree with New Super Mario Bros. And I'll add Trauma Center: Under the Knife. Fantastic game where you get to be a surgeon with a stylus. It's all very cartoony so you don't have to worry about it being gory. Last edited by Ninja Dodo; 10-14-2007 at 11:24 AM. |

I'll echo the suggestion of all those here but also recommend:
Animal Crossing: Wild World Zoo Keeper (there's a flash version online so you can try before hand) Cooking Mama Wario Ware Touched

Its a port of the already translated original. What makes you think its getting a new translation for the ds release? 1 & 2 didn't...

I was gonna mention it, but it's just, well, Tetris. It's very good Tetris and it's there if you want it, but it's not unique to the DS in the way that other games are. To put it another way, I wouldn't buy a DS to play it, but if you have one it's worth getting. |

Yoshi Touch & Go, and Kirby Cursed Canvas are both awesome, no matter what everyone else thinks.

Might as well wait. It's coming out very soon. It'd probably be out by the time you finish the first two if you were to start them now.

I thought about getting this instead, but the music selection doesn't seem any better than EBA. The Japanese text might get in the way as well, and I'm not sure I want to wait for the English translation that Crunchy mentioned.

If you play EBA, and find yourself screaming "I want more," then import Ouendan and Ouendan 2. They aren't worth buying in place of EBA (unless you're a Japanophile) but they are worth buying as a sort of "expansion pack" for EBA. The Japanese text shouldn't bother you at all, especially if you play EBA first, as the interface is nearly identical, and the stories are primarily told through pictures.

I know this has been recommended already, but I just finished Trace Memory (Another Code), and I absolutely loved it! Yes, it's on the short side (I clocked 7.5 hours), but it is a truly delightful game. The puzzles, while being pretty straightforward, are fun to do because of the use of the DS functions. I'm going to replay it because there are puzzles I didn't do that aren't necessarily important to finish the game (but do contribute to the story) and I know that I didn't find all of the inventory I could have.
Well worth getting. |

The 'canned heat' level in eba is a fricken nightmare, on all difficulties. I have ouendan 2 and expect to buy the english translation. the songs, though unknown to me where more fun than those in eba. they also cover a wider emotional range. eba uses mostly pop/rock ballads for a fun atmosphere. it was quite a shock when playing ouendan 2 to encounter tear jerker songs set over comics about the death of a close friend and the death of a family member. so keep that in mind, you might not want to tap/slide/spin someone through that kind of grief...
