Default Metal Gear Solid 2....overrated?

I started playing this finally, having loved the MGS that had come before it, but I dunno...I hate to say it, but I think it sucks! The controls are bad, the cutscenes are long and boring, and there is no sort of direction to the game. I find myself going through the same areas over and over and over again saying "where the hell am I supposed to go!?"

Tell me how i'm wrong, because this is saddening.

The first part of the game in the tanker was great....and apparently that was going to be the whole game untill they realised they made it too short and threw in thw whole conpiracy thing with the oil rig and the blonde guy

I remember playing the first part up until the bit where you have to take some photographs, and then finding the timing hell. Particularly as it didn't have the decency to tell me whether the photographs were good enough before I uploaded them to a computer, by which time it was too late to go and take replacements.

It's a reasonably fun game, but it's a huge triumph of style over substance. Much like the original, it screams "I want to be a film!" constantly, only without a plot that's nearly as engaging as it thinks it is. Maybe it gets better, but I didn't feel compelled to complete either MGS or MGS2, and not just because I'm terrible at the boss fights.

Nice rain and hair effects in the opening section, though. Maybe I should reinstall it at some point, but I hear that MGS2 hates Windows XP.

I finished MGS and MGS2.

I prefered MGS as MGS2 descends into one long cutscene, especially towards the end.

I enjoyed both MGS and MGS2 equally much, but as SakSquash said, the controls are pretty awfull.

Even if I am a big fan of the MGS series I agree that MGS 2 is overrated thus it's my least favorite game in the series. It's more like a polished, similar version of the first game (but lacking the intriguing characters and plot of the first game) cunningly presented as the simulation of what happened in the first game. There is also "Raiden element" which makes game much less appealing.Ingame graphics and details are amazing though.

To me, Metal Gear Solid games are not games, they are just movies that pretend to be games.
I've played MGS and a little bit of MGS2 and both have the same feel that "this is not a game".

So yes, my conclusion is that MGS is very much overrated.

Yes, they most definately can be wrong. That's why some call it overrated. Because of the 1 million fans who claim it's God. Majority opinion doesn't make it fact.

I must be one of the only people who liked MGS2, I thought turning solid snake into a "mentor" type character was great, I also loved the ending, I didn't like Raiden but he didn't annoy me that much.

Yup. MGS 4 is gonna suck, Snake looks like an aging maths teacher and the metal gears look like something from star trek

They should have just remade the metal gear games instead of making mgs4

Mgs 4 will surely rock ,it has many new original gameplay features and a plot filled with lots of twists and surprises. About Metal Gear Gekkous we've seen so far ,to quote from Kojima "The essence of Metal Gear is different. The Gekkou may use some of the technology you've seen in past Metal Gears, like bipedal legs and weaponry however it isn't a weapon with the lethality of a Metal Gear,it's more of a jeep or a tank" so the real Metal Gear in MGS 4 is yet to be seen.

Yep, I was really disappointed with MGS2. I didn't even finish it- got about halfway and got annoyed with the ludicrous plot and rubbish controls.
