What other new games will be based on the Doom 3 engine?
It surprises me that Prey doesn't use source. Jaap

Prey Trailer, Demo Plans [April 24, 2006, 11:27 pm ET] - 18 Comments
A blog comment by Scott Miller on Game Matters (thanks Voodoo Extreme) has word from 3D Realms that as crunch time progresses on Prey, they are preparing to release a playable demo for the first-person shooter in the works at Human Head Studios. Word is: "That's why we're releasing a demo of Prey before the game comes out, and I feel very strongly that the demo will be our most important marketing tool for the game, by a long shot." In further Prey news, the 3D Realms Website has a list of mirrors of "a high quality downloadable video file of the new "Prey Super Trailer" by Jeron Moore." |

The one thing that attracts me to this game is the embracing of Native American mythology, that is if it won't prove to be just a shallow thing to make the game appeal through exoticness. Otherwise I also think that it looks too much like Doom 3.

Come here, Tonto, and see how we embrace Native American mythology with Turok and Prey.

I wouldn't go to Prey for a lesson in Native American mythology. Something makes me think they'll either mess that up (depending on how you look at it) or once the first FMV's done it'll never be important again.

Why's it matter, anyway? Whether it treats the folklore well or not isn't going to make or break it as a game.

Anyway, I think the game looks like a blast and I'm buying the limited edition box with the pewter figurine of the mutated creature. I think the art and animation in this particular FPS looks especially fantastic. That weird-ass alien gun with tentacles is wicked. I mean... COME ON!!! this looks like such a fun shooter. It's lookin' sleek alright.
I'm really looking forward to getting into this game.

I think it looks a couple of years old.

Does the limited edition have anything else extra than the figurine compared to the regular edition?
Man, this game looks hot. One of the few games these days that I really want to play.

Doom 3 engine gives this renderish sci-fi look (which I love) but Source gives a more realistic result closer to the real world. Both engines are great although Source seems more complete somehow. About Prey being the most anticipated FPS with Crysis and BioShock on the (long) way, I think not.

Maybe it's 'cause I'm seeing games like Mass Effect or Bioshock and the art direction looks and feels lighter and definitely less 'thick'.

Prey looks okay, probably the next Quake 4. Bioshock, Stranglehold & Crysis are among the most anticipated shooters for me.

Nah, I know what you're talking about. They're almost plastic looking. The environments aren't quite as organic as some of the other titles mentioned. But that's also because they are all very "space station-esque" environments perhaps. Personally, I dig the look of the Doom 3 engine games. |

It was technologically a wonderful achievement from those unknown guys from Sweden. They made D3 shadows happen before D3 itself was released.

Yes, they all look a bit plastic (not outdated in any other way, mind you, though certainly not top of the line anymore), including Riddick, but it's not to say that all Source based games look fantastic. Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, for instance, looks pretty disappointing in its E3 trailer.
Half-Life 2 is still drop dead gorgeous, due to some amazing texture work and superb lighting, but all other Source based games I've seen (Bloodlines, Dark Messiah and even Sin) aren't nearly as pretty.

I hate the overuse of normal mapping in Doom 3 engine games. Not everything has to be wet and shiny, game developers .
