Mind you, I can't find a Microsoft press release at the moment. I'm liable to trust the Beeb, though...

I'll pass on this one. I am not going to pay 200 bucks for a new OS just to play a 2 year old game. It's obviously a devious marketting scheme to make PC people buy Vista, and I'm not fallin' for it (not yet at least ).

Well, a new graphical user interface, for starters.

Wow. How arrogant. I sincerely hope this decision backfires on them.

I hope BBC pays its reporters a lot for this kind of penetrating analysis.

Tsk tsk, you're supposed to work somewhere that has copies of XP floating around, not download it ;P

I thought they were going to give this and most of Vista's new features to Windows XP in updates?

I dont see the point in these new windows upgrades, if they need updates, let them be downloaded, Im not going to shell out money for a operating system that only has a new interface.

Didn't hear anything about that, but why would they do it?

Well, there was a definite jump from DOS to Windows 95 .

Compatibility, promoting developers to use the technology. XP applications will run on Vista, but applications made for Vista wouldn't work for XP.

WinFS, they're not shipping Vista with this, but they were and if they did, they were going to make it available for Win XP, so XP could see Vista partitions(important external HDD). WinFX, applications made for Vista wouldn't run on XP without it. Avalon, the GUI, also for compatibility with Vista applications. Also also they're going to be released for Windows Server 2003.

It's been in the known before Longhorn became Vista.

I understand if they're going to patch Windows Server 2003, at least until there's a new server version available, but what would provide the initiative to upgrade to Vista for the mass market users if they'd be able to get practically all Vista functionality with free XP patches?

And WinFS will still be built upon NTFS so there's no reason why XP machines wouldn't be able to read Vista partitions (which are going to remain NTFS by default), they just wouldn't be able to use WinFS-specific features. Or am I wrong?

I mean, yay for MS if they give people all that for free, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Yeah you're right, the partition could be physically read, the problem would be in the files being names and ordered in a usuable way.

I probably won't be upgrading for the "new and improved" GUI and Widgets or for Halo 2, but I do want to play Crysis when the game comes out Damn, that's going to be one expensive game. Ofcourse there'll be more DX10 games but still..

I am not a mac user so I have no clue, but my friends told me that a lot of the features in the Vista UI is kind of a ripoff of the Mac. Is that true? Like the 3d windows, and the transparency of them so you can see through.
