Default Okami - Funky game set to be released somewhere in 2006.

I searched on the forums and didnt find a thread about this, I think this game looks amazing, I love the graphics style, be sure to check out the gameplay videos.

Uh...no, that's why i'm saying this sucks. Weird ass games from Japan IS regurgitated crap that has been fed through the pipeline for about 10 years now.

Where have you ever seen a game that looks like or plays like Okami?

If there is anything still redeeming this industry, it is games like Okami.

I agree with Soccsie. Japan simply has a culture rich with particular abstractions, concepts, and symbolism compared to Western culture, or at least, specifically the U.S.

American culture thrives on more of a non-intellectual, often times 'spoonfed' kind of entertainment, whether it be literature, film, or games. There is usually little abstraction, most everything is spelled out for you. And all that tends to breed a population of consumers whose minds and imagination are not likely to be challenged and stretched to their limits. I think that is partly to do with the U.S. being a very young country (compared to thousands of years of Japan, centuries upon centuries of Europe, or millenia of Middle Eastern civilization). It also has a great deal to do with American culture being a huge mish mash of many different kinds of cultures.

Many mainstream Americans, corn-fed by such things as Tom Clancy, Survivor, McDonald's, The Terminator, wouldn't be able to understand games like ICO or Okami. They'd find these games too abstract, too foreign.

As usual, Trepsie puts it much more eloquently than I can ever dream. I totally agree with you.
Some of the games coming from Japan have an absurd storyline, like Metal Gear Solid for example. But you just don't take it literally, or you'll be missing the point. It is a framework for you to come up with your own interpretation of the piece using your imagination, instead of being presented with the whole picture layed out before you on a golden plate.

You know, I was tempted to agree with you guys until you said this. I'm having serious trouble forgiving a bad plot on the grounds that I'm "missing the point". Didn't MGS always try to present itself as an incredibly cinematic piece? Given that, is an absurd story actually excusable? I'm not quite sure how my imagination factors in with a game like MGS, as it's quite clearly supposed to be presenting me with the tale.

Am I just missing something? Maybe MGS is a bad example; I think a game like Okami is a pretty different kettle of fish...

The metal gear franchise is much deeper than it looks. After finishing MGS 2, I was really "disappointed" by its convoluted plot and storyline. I just browsed the net for a meaning to all this crazyness, and I found a lot of philosophical interpretations of the game. It really opened my mind to how different the Japanese are in telling a story than the western culture.

But are they different when it comes to telling the story, or are you just reading things into it having read the philosophical interpretations? I'm sure that, at a pinch, we could write some similar discussion about any number of Western games...
