It does remind of a game I picked up in a chairty shop a few years back. (CD only. Always fun to try to play an RTS that way)

Is it either War Wind or the one I picked up War Wind 2 : Human Onslaught?

Incidentally, I got this game for free yonks ago when Gameplay used to offer free games with every order. Those were the days. And it was CD only, but I picked it up fairly quickly.

The main controls were fine. I always like to have an idea on what units are capabale of BEFORE I build them though.

OK, a clue. You see the four logos in a sqaure near the bottom left in that screenshot? If I remember correctly you could use those to swap between the four playable races at will.
