Hmm... I tried again at home and at work (using Firefox 1.0.7 both times) and I'd describe it this way now:

1) After visiting one gallery page (for example the last image of Dreamfall), the thumbnails are loaded for the first time and cached.
2) after going to a previous page, the thumbnails are displayed
a) either immediately (cached by browser), in which case they are *still* reloaded (I can see every image going white and then the reloaded). This process takes half a minute or so.
b) some of them are intitially missing (this happened yesterday, but not today)

oh, I just tried IE and noticed google ads between the large image and thumbnails. Firefox doesn't display those google ads for me, ther's just an empty space. Hmm.. and IE doesn't have problems with loading the thumbnails either.

[update] The google ads disappeared in IE as well.
