Default Geez...I thought I was a movie fan...

I have my DVD collection listed over at DVD Aficionado, but I haven't updated it in a while. Apparently they've added folders now that show you how your collection can be broken down. One of the folders is "Foreign" and it shows you how many DVDs you have of films from each country. I was quite disappointed by my results, I must say.

Granted, I own more foreign DVDs than are listed (since I haven't updated lately) and many more on VHS that haven't been released on DVD yet, but it's still rather upsetting. Part of the problem may be that British and Canadian films aren't considered "foreign" since the language is still English. I have a ton of British films and several Canadian (mostly Egoyan). And there's no sign of Polish films on the list (I'm a big Krzysztof Kieslowski fan) because those are lumped into "Eastern Europe"...bah. All my films from India are mostly VHS, some of my Chinese films aren't showing up in the folders I noticed...damn it all.

On the bright side, these are just the DVDs I actually OWN, not including films I've seen but simply don't own...maybe I am still a good movie fan. Anyway...here are my crummy results (I still think some stuff is missing somehow).

Foreign (2/216)
Foreign / Brazil (1)

Wow, thank goodness you asked actually because I was able to figure something out. One of Germany's greatest periods in film was the silent era, and lo and behold the silents aren't counted toward my total. All silents are just bunched into a folder called "Silent" regardless of the country of origin. So, all my German silent films on DVD (like Dr. Mabuse, Metropolis, Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, etc.) aren't even counted as German films! Bah...

Anyway, the German films that were counted were things like Das Boot, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Fassbinder's BRD trilogy (The Marriage of Maria Braun, Veronika Voss, Lola), M, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse, etc. I've seen many more German films, of that I am certain, but I only purchase the ones I'm really impressed by.

Wow, I think I only own one foreign DVD (excluding UK movies and shows), and that's Goodbye, Lenin.

Oh joy! Because of this question I was able to discover something else! DVD boxed sets aren't counted as multiple films, they only count the single box. For instance, from Eastern Europe I have the Andrzej Wajda: Three War Films boxed set including A Generation, Kanal, and Ashes and Diamonds. But this only counts as ONE film. These questions are really helping my ego to establish itself again!

Other Eastern European films I have on DVD are:

Closely Watched Trains
The Decalogue (best made for television series ever)
The Firemen's Ball
Knife in the Water
Loves of a Blonde
The Shop on Main Street

I've been trying to find more German movies to watch, but all i've heard of so far is Run Lola Run, and I can't find it anywhere.

Talas, I must admit that it's Y Tu Mama Tambien, but on the bright side...I have seen many Mexican films that simply haven't been released on DVD and/or I didn't like. Heh.

I highly recommend Das Boot. I think it's one you would really enjoy.

No problem, I only own six classic mexican films, I don't care much for the recent stuff, it's just that almost everyone I know who buys a mexican movie outside my country, buys one of those two... mhhh, and now that I think about it, I actually own more german films

If you want a good comedy, I recommend "Der Schuh des Manitu" ("Manitou's Shoe"/"Manitu's Shoe") - that is, if you can find it. Sadly it seems to be difficult to find it in english.

Run Lola Run is available at Amazon, by the way.

The only problem with Mexican films today is that many of the best directors there have been "lured" to Hollywood. Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Alfonso Cuarón, etc. Hollywood steals the talented people away...

I'm sure a lot of online shops still carry it. (once again too lazy to search )
Try searching under the original title; Lola Rennt.
It will be worth it, gotta love that movie if only for the brilliant editing.
I've got it on DVD with some interesting outtakes.

Yeah, I didn't like it. I've already seen Arau's short movie from the late 90s (I think) about the same thing, it worked for a short movie, but it doesn't work when one joke is beaten to death for an hour and a half.

There are a lot of talented moviemakers around here, the problem is that they are not rich enough to make their movies and the government doesn't help, and yeah, when they are successful they go to the US.

And I have to say that Lola Rennt is one of my favorite movies, I try to watch it again at least once a month.

My all time favorite Dutch movie is 'Karakter' (Character)
which is based on an even greater novel by the Dutch writer 'Bordewijk'.
In my humble opninion we Dutch are better at writing books than making (lowbudget) movies anyway.

Ah yes, Karakter was a good movie. I think it won the Best Foreign Film Oscar that year (not that Oscars usually mean anything). That's a movie that's worth owning, but I just haven't gotten around to buying the DVD yet. So, good call.

By the way, the one I have is Spoorloos. Known in America as The Vanishing. It was actually remade in the U.S. as The Vanishing, and it's a poor imitation of the original despite being made by the same director (the tacked on happy ending for American audiences was insulting for one thing). If you haven't seen it yet you should give it a try.

Going slightly off topic:

The finnish movie 'The man without a past' by Aki Kaurismäki was on television over here tonight.
I had already seen it in a movie theatre though but I still found it a very interesting movie by a great director.
Has anybody here ever seen it or the other two parts in Kaurismäki's Finland trilogy?
