Ha, I wouldn't be suprised if the reactionary wankers in office at the moment here in Holland revoked our law on gay marriage. We so need the socialists back.

Isn't this the fourth country to now legalize it? The Land of the Free should hurry up here, I think.

I just watched US Wife Swap. Well, listened to it, really. I was working.

Anyhoo, they swapped a liberal lesbian with an extreme right-wing Christian. The outcome was, during the meeting, the Christain woman calling the lesbian "depraved according to the Bible" and bashing on about how wrong her life was. The poor woman on the receiving end had tried so hard with the others family, she was shocked into tears by the verbal abuse and shamed the other lady into silence - "why do people like you hate people like us? I want nothing more than to have a life of peace, teach my child tolerance and respect for others and have the same respect as anyone else" (along those lines)

Funny thing was, most of the time the Christian lady's family was preaching tolerance and treated the lesbian lady with respect, despite their feelings towards her gender. The other laded FORCED the lesbian woman in her own household to put up a Republican sign because it the Christian woman supported them. In a predominantly gay street.

For shame for me thinking this, but I coulda really decked that woman if I was treated with that amount of disrespect for myself, my political beliefs and my way of life.

Curious, what does Socialism have to do with this? Do you mean Liberalism?

Well for one thing, it was mostly the socialist PvdA that was in power back when they legalised gay marriage in Holland and incidentally Spain has just such a socialist government right now.

I don't think the government of christian fundamentalists will go along with that any time soon...

Oh, right. Indirect association, then (since the ideal of socialism itself is pretty neutral on the mentioned ground). Thanks for clearing that up. I had no idea.

Woo-hoo! Bravo Spain!
I'm ready to fly to Spain right now and get married, except for one thing...

Lack of offers.

We're working on it.

Even though gay marriage was only briefly allowed in San Francisco, the time it was going on was one of the most palpably exciting times I can remember in the 5+ years I've lived here. I don't think I've ever felt so proud of local government (and proud to be a citizen of a certain place) as I did then.

I remember a couple interviewed on the news right after they got married in San Francisco - they had already been married in Vermont, and planned to travel to Massachusetts as soon as the law passed and to the Netherlands after that. Their comment was that they were going to get married in as many places as they could... one of them was bound to stick.

I think we've got both coasts covered in the U.S. How long till the rest of the country catches up, I wonder?

I don't think it's a matter of whether we Americans will go along with it, but WHEN. Remember, a lot of these people who are against gay anything, who are in a position of power, are old men. It's generational, they will die off gradually (taking many of their screwed up beliefs with them), making room for a new breed of younger leaders.

Amen, Trepsie. May we all live long enough to see that happen.

I don't know. Rabid religious fanaticism dies hard. These people haven't really moved on from the Dark Ages, so they've been at it a while...

When we get some liberal democrats in power, the pendulum will swing the other direction.

True, but religious fanatacism also waxes and wanes periodically. We seem to be just approaching the peak of an upswing right now. The tide will turn as it always does, hopefully soon.

Edit- Once again, FGM and I have had the same thought at the same time. (insert "Twilight Zone" theme here)
