How male or female is your brain?
http://growe.homeip.net/BaronCohen/MaleFemale.asp
Simon Baron-Cohen's recent book The Essential Difference: Men, Women and the Extreme Male Brain proposes that "The female brain is predominantly hard-wired for empathy. The male brain is predominantly hard-wired for understanding and building systems." I saw this on Richard & Judy a while ago. They had a test listing features of a 'female' brain, and features of a 'male' brain. Turns out 1 in 5 men have a 'female' brain. Aspects I can remember: Female brain: Jumps to conclusions Cannot navigate easily using maps Can read emotions purely from the eyes Male brain: Likes reading DIY magazines Likes play-fighting Understands 'systems' One of the tests was to gauge people's emotions from their eyes. They showed a series of 4 photographs just of the eyes, and for each one offered 4 different emotions. Interestingly, as soon as the options appeared I shouted out the correct answer, and my wife got it wrong. I got 4/4, she got 0. See how well you do! And Judy said "If I'm navigating in the car, I have to turn the map around so that we're always heading up" and Richard replied "That's right! You can't do it in your head like I can", which I identified with. I also hate play-fighting and never jump to conclusions (because the logic of the male part of my brain disallows it). Read the review, do the tests and decide what you have! Turns out I have aspects of a female brain, but can also do some male-brain things (such as navigating a map in my head, and understanding 'systems').

I got:
Empathy Quotient Your score: 20 0 - 32 = low (most people with Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning autism score about 20) Systemizing quotient Your score: 62 51 - 80 is very high (three times as many people with Asperger Syndrome score in this range, compared to typical men, and almost no women score in this range) Reading the mind in the eyes Your score: 26 A typical score is in the range 22-30. Autism Spectrum quotient Your score: 32 32 - 50 is very high (most people with Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning autism score about 35) There seems to be a message in all of this!

Too bad the website is down...
EDIT: Ah, it's back up! Systemizing quotient: Your score: 24 20 - 39 = average (most women score about 24 and most men score about 30) Empathy quotient: Your score: 20 0 - 32 = low (most people with Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning autism score about 20) Autism spectrum quotient: Your score: 32 32 - 50 is very high (most people with Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning autism score about 35) Reading the mind in the eyes: Your score: 16 A typical score is in the range 22-30. If you scored over 30, you are very accurate at decoding a person's facial expressions around their eyes. A score under 22 indicates you find this quite difficult.

And me:
Empathy Quotient Your score: 56 53 - 63 is above average Systemizing quotient Your score: 43 40 - 50 = above average (most people with Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning autism score in this range) Reading the mind in the eyes Your score: 24 A typical score is in the range 22-30. NOTE: I don't think this test makes much sense as I've had to lighten up some of the images manually to even see the eyes because of the way my monitor is. I can't anyone's going to tell me that has no impact on the result. Autism Spectrum quotient Your score: 11 11 - 22 = average (most women score about 15 and most men score about 17)

That eye thing was absolutely impossible. I thought most of them looked exactly the same. And regarding the rest, I don't know if my results were like that due to autism or just plain low self esteem... *shrugs*

I did the first two,
Systemising=40 Empathy=29 But it's probably not very accurate, I probably answered 1/3 of the questions wrong.

Eyes=22 (I think I'm actually better at this, I just tried to go really fast again and almost all the ones I got wrong were my second choices). Also it doesn't help that they're so close to each other. It creates some visual illusions.

Systematizing = 25
Empathy = 50 Eyes = 24 (although, I wish I'd done better...I guess part of my ability to tell how a person feels stems from my ability to read the rest of the face, I guess) |

Systemizing: 30
I am surprised I didn't score lower as I rarely think of myself as very systematic Empathy: 60 Autism Spectrum: 11 Eye to whatever thing: 32 Interesting test - though I never quite know what these things really indicate about people. |

Systemizing quotient, 20
Empathy quotient, 32 Autism spectrum quotient, 16 Mind in the eyes, 27 It's funny essentially being asking if I'm empathetic in the empathy test. I enjoy these online quizzes more than I should. There's a whole whackload here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/mind/ including one which tests the fe/maleness of your brain. It shouldn't be hard to find. |

Systemizing Quotient
Your score: 45 40 - 50 = above average (most people with Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning autism score in this range) Empathy Quotient Your score: 39 33 - 52 = average (most women score about 47 and most men score about 42) Autism Spectrum Your score: 11 11 - 22 = average (most women score about 15 and most men score about 17) Mind in the Eyes Your score: 31 If you scored over 30, you are very accurate at decoding a person's facial expressions around their eyes. ------------------------- Oh dear, it looks like I have autistic traits. ...not that I, personally, feel like I do. Some of those questions had double meanings. It seems I'm a pretty average joe, even if I don't feel like one and never fit in anywhere.

I averaged out on all the tests apart from the eyes, I got 4 wrong but I think I would have done better at it if they where not such crappy images. You can't even see the dilation of the pupils in most of them which is a huge indicator of emotion, its more a reading of the eyebrows than the eyes. Some of my wrong answers say something about me I guess. I have trouble understanding the eyes of older people. I don't spend a lot of personal time face to face with the elderly and they have next to no presence at all in every day media (television and movies). Despite mistaking number 33's concerned look for guilt (I tend to expect men to employ phony concern to disguise guilt, hell I do) I find it easier to read men's eyes than women's (without the pupils) since I'm not practiced at giving men long eye contact (animal instinct) I can pick up more from just the eyebrows I guess.

Systemizing quotient - 34
20 - 39 = average (most women score about 24 and most men score about 30) Empathy quotient - 37 33 - 52 = average (most women score about 47 and most men score about 42) Autism Spectrum quotient - 12 11 - 22 = average (most women score about 15 and most men score about 17) Mind the eyes - 30 A typical score is in the range 22-30. If you scored over 30, you are very accurate at decoding a person's facial expressions around their eyes. A score under 22 indicates you find this quite difficult. Not sure how these tests helps me decide what to choose in the poll though, lol!

Where's the option to vote "Female with a Hermaphrodite Brain"?
