Default Need help: UK tv show

None of my friends can help me. They think I made it up. You guys are my only hope. Picture it...

(80's montage)

...Its thursday afternoon, Teatime-ish, 1987 (not completely sure), im 9-ish.
Just watched A-team now im sitting down to another show. Here is EVERYTHING I remember...

Sci-fi
Gameshow - Krypton Factor/ Crystal Maze style.
2 Teams of 2 - possibly father/son type teams.
One segment featured a white diamond grid suspended over space between 2 platforms. The grid had to be negotiated by the contestants. The grid was inhabited by a beam of light style creature/alien that the contestants couldnt see (we the viewers could).
But it could be detected and avoided by throwing a disc (a weird part of me thinks it was a hamburger?!) in the direction they wanted to go. If the disc (burger) dissolved then the contestant must find another route.
Here comes the weird part that makes me think my mother may have spiked my cereal. The host may have been female, cant really remember, BUT the hosts assistant was, oh god, a plant on a stone pillar. It was always generally in a bad mood and wanted the contestants to lose. When it got angry it, im sorry about this, it shook its leaves and grumbled.

Please help me. Am i insane or did this show really exist?

The BBC is evil... they cut whole scenes out of films to appeal to younger audiences. There's no telling what else they do to their programming.

I do think you're talking about The Adventure Game. What a shocking coincidence that you asked about it on an adventure forum!

I vaguely remembered it and did some searching and I think this is the program. It features a talking plant that ruled the planet the gameshow was set in.

This is the grid you mentioned I think:
