Syd Barrett formed the band and was the primary impetus for their first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but by their second full-length release, A Saucerful of Secrets, Barrett was essentially out of the picture and from that point on until the late 80s (by which time Waters had left) Waters was the main force behind the band.
