I have over 400 CDs from the 80's that I'd like to take songs from and store them on my computer in MP3 format. Can someone explain how (or if) this can be done? Please keep it simple, as I have very little technical knowledge.

There are many ways this can be done. One of the easiest - and the method I recommend - is to use iTunes (if you don't have it, it's a free download from Apple). It can import the CDs you insert in the computer and store them in its library automatically if you want. If I recall correctly, the default setting is that it asks what you want to do when you insert a CD.

I think most other music players have a similar function, so if you already have a favourite music player, it may also be able to do what you want.

Then there are many free programs floating around on the net that does nothing except "rip" (= copy) CDs. One I can recommend if you have slightly damaged CDs is called Exact Audio Copy. I've had success with that one even on CDs so scratched that they wouldn't play in a normal CD player.

Windows Media has a CD Rip function that copies CD's to your hard drive.

I tend to use FreeRip, which works nicely and also looks up all the titles and such for you so you don't have to enter them manually...
