hi guys, i'm an 18 (19 in 3 months) years old and from new jersey. i've been an adventure gamer for years about 5 now, ever since i was about 12 yers old. i graduated high school about 5 months ago and i have done nothing with my life since then. then there's college...now to my point, i want to go to college to be a real life adventure game. ok in lamens terms i want to be a private investagator, it would be so ausome to go out and solve puzzles and finly get the reward in the end. i've told my sister and she laughed at me but it's somthing i relay want to do. i was jsut wondering if it's relay that stupid?
(and i know someone's guna make a remark for the post "you know you've played to many adventure games when") |

There's no reward in the end, and no solution to look up.
And looking back, it's more of an RPG. |

Umm... are you serious about wanting it to be like an adventure game or were you kidding about that part? Firstly, there's no "Load" button in real life, although they say that Jesus saves

Like Erkki said, there are no saved games in real life. And unlike most adventure games, there are timed-sequences and you can die. So, there you go. Also, don't expect a walkthrough when you get stuck.

Anyway, I don't think it's dumb to want to be a private investigator, but I don't really think much of it has anything to do with movies or adventure games. And most of the "cases" would probably have nothing to "solve" as the majority of them would probably be doing background checks, collecting debts, divorce-related stuff etc. (the latter is what 90% of detective work in the USA is about, or so I've heard).

Guy Guy, there's nothing dumb about wanting to be a PI. There's everything dumb about expecting it to be like an adventure game though.
You get killed - you're DEAD! And that's just for starters........ I find it rather dumb that you posted the topic in this forum though. This is more chit-chatty.

Still, guybrush_guy, I too have been wanting too be a PA (and even to join the police ) for the sake of all this figuring-things-out, so I know what you mean. Also, the social aspects of this kind of work seems quite appealing to me.

Being a private investigator is probably nothing like how it's portrayed on TV, Games etc, so be warey if their the sole reason you want to do that career. It's like people becoming Doctors because they like E.R. I imagine it's a hard job, with a very unstable pay and unchanging career prospects. Perhaps the Police (Detective or above) is a better option?
Anyway all I'm saying that you need to really think before you embark on such a career, and you should probably research the career throughly. If your main reason is because you think it's like an adventuregame, then I'd probably think some more. (p.s. most private investigators look into adultery and divorce I imagine. Anything like Murder will be almost completely out of their reach)

The FBI would be a great place to try and get into if you want to do investigation. I don't know if you would be a "private" investigator, though. But as I understand it, most PIs start out working for some official organization like the FBI or the police before going independent. It kind of gives you better credentials.
Anyway, I can see the association between adventures and private investigating, but as others here have pointed out, there is a huge difference between detective work in games and real life detective work. The danger is certainly an element that would be more significant in real life, but some of the people here may be overstating it a little bit. A lot of investigation, especially private investigation is going through records and stuff like that. As an example of something a PI might be working on, a lot of investigators are hired now to find out whether somebody's spouse is having an affair. Stuff like that. So to get to the point, you should only go into investigation if that's what you really want to do, not just because you saw it in a game (even though that may be what draws you to the field in the first place). If you're serious about going into detective work, you might want to check out this link: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos157.htm mag |

Com' on people. When we described our desk as our inventory I don't think anyone tried to put it all in the pocket. I mean the guy probably knows what real life is. He just likes AGs thats all.

There's certainly nothing "dumb" about being inspired to do or be something because of a video game. I'm sure that books, movies, games and the like have inspired people to do a lot of things. When I was in high school playing video games I thought I wanted to be a programmer. Then I started learning some programming, and I quickly discovered that that probably wasn't what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The point is inspiration is good, but you can't stop there. Sure, we know that detective work in real life is different from detective work in games, but how many of us know what it really is like? Maybe guybrush_guy will look into it and find out that he doesn't like it. Or maybe he'll find out that he loves it. The point is that he should have all of the information before deciding that. And whatever inspired him to look into it in the first place, whether it's video games or something else, isn't really relevant after that. Alright, I think I've written enough. I will now relinquish my soapbox. mag |
