I'm more surprised about Leonardo DiCaprio than Will Smith, personally.

I'm pretty happy with the nominations. Mark Whalberg and Alan Arkin being nominated for Best Supporting Actor was a very nice surprise, both were great. Hopefully The Departed or Little Miss Sunshine will win.

The Academy loves old British women. I think it's about time that they give other actors and directors struggling for recognition a chance, but then what do I know? Oh, and Babel's overrated.

By the way, anyone seen Jesus Camp? It looks really interesting but I don't know if it's going to come out here.

With that competition, Letters From Iwo Jima clearly stands head and shoulders above the other four. I've seen all of them and, quite frankly, the only film that really stands a chance of upsetting Letters is Babel. I think the Academy will honor Scorsese with the Best Director award, but then I think Best Picture will go to (or at least SHOULD go to) Letters From Iwo Jima.

Too bad Pan's Labyrinth isn't up for Best Picture. If it was, I think it would be the only real challenger to Letters.

I haven't seen enough to make any judgements on the picks but this article is interesting in discussing the Dreamgirls snub.

The only place near me that's playing Pan's Labyrinth is San Francisco. I should drive in but I may be lazy and wait for the DVD.

Hmmm... I thought it was a surprisingly good year for movies, personally. But yes, the nominations seem rather weak. If it were up to me, the nominations would be Letters From Iwo Jima, Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, Babel, and United 93.

Strictly speaking, its the oscar nominations for 2006, not 2007...

But it's for the 2007 Oscars.

I'm a bit surprised that everyone here loved Children of Men as much as they did. I went into it with fairly high expectations because of the talent involved and the concept of the story, but was quite disappointed when I left. Technically it's a brilliant film, it's a well-told story for what it is and well acted and all the rest, but it ended up as nothing more than a fancy chase film. I would have loved a deeper exploration into the ideas behind the whole thing, and maybe a little less of the cat and mouse game that it turned in to.

I guess I found the end result a little too simplistic for the premise it was based on, as did most other people that I know who saw it. The film had an amazing amount of potential, and while it was certainly a very good film in the end, I would hazard ranking it as one of the year's best because they could have done so much more with the material. Am I the only one on the forum who thinks this (I've noticed it's largely the same thing on other forums too)?

I agree, I was also disappointed with Children Of Men.

Thoughts:
-I hope Scorsese finally wins the oscar he deserves.
- Where's Jack Nickolson's nomination? Best acting performance of the year, if you ask me.
- I'm happy with so many nominations for Pan's labyrinth. I hope they win a couple.
