Jost go to http://www.knoppix.org/, download the CD version of Knoppix, burn it on a CD. Now, if you have some kind of USB dongle or HD (preferably formatted with FAT32), plug it in and boot with the CD. Knoppix should automatically detect all your harddrives and display them on your desktop. Just copy whatever you want from the old drive to the dongle.

Thanks. I tried using Ubuntu first, and didn't have any luck with that, so I'll give Knoppix a shot.

I'm almost certain that my HD is in NTFS and not FAT32 though, will that make a difference?

I loaded up Knoppix, but my hard drive didn't display on the desktop, and I've poked all around the OS, but I can't find any way to access it.

I have no idea whether Knoppix supports writing to NTFS, it certainly supports reading, just make sure the target drive is FAT32.

It is odd that knoppix doesn't autodetect the drives, it sure did for me (last time I tried it was a few years ago, though). It couldn't even find the USB drive?

I've made some progress! After Knoppix wouldn't detect my hard drive, I took the hard drive out of my laptop, put it into my old laptop, and loaded up Knoppix on that. It found the hard drive straight away, and I managed to access it and transfer all the files onto my MP3 player! There must be something really strange going on with my laptop, now I've rescued the files I need I'm sending it back to Alienware for them to repair it.

Thanks for telling me about Knoppix, it worked like a charm in the end.

When I play certain 3D games like Half-life 2, Psychonauts, and Thief 3, the games will run fine for a few minutes but then lock up. Unreal Tournament 3 Beta crashes to Windows with a memory error. Same & Max: Episode 101 runs just fine, as does Starcraft, so it might be memory or CPU intensive games that do it. I've run memtest and found no errors, used only one RAM stick at a time, updated every driver, but nothing has helped.

I'm thinking that my GeForce 6600 may have gone bad. Is there something like memtest for video cards to make sure?

I'm glad it did.
