Yeah, that soundtrack was really nice.

One other soundtrack that I really like is Cliff Martinez' score for Solaris.

Yeah, it was a very touching soundtrack, I listened to it frequently when I had a mobilephone that had mp3 capabilities.

Alone in Kyoto was by Air, and really...their Virgin Suicides score was amazing and atmospheric; one of the few film scores I can listen to without the accompanying film. Lost in Translation was in my opinion a brilliant use of music, but the best of it was pre-recorded.

Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota for sure.

Philip Glass's scores for the Qatsi trilogy is amazing and perfectly accentuates Reggio's images.

Jon Brion's score for Punch-Drunk Love was chaotic, beautiful, and brilliant.

It doesn't really count but Pink Floyd's Echoes set to the final act of 2001: A Space Odyssey (Jupiter and Beyond...) is breathtaking. I'd be willing to bet money they intentionally "scored" that part of the film.

Howard Shore had some interesting scores for Cronenberg's pictures, nevermind his LotR work.

Giovanni Fusco's work for Alain Resnais (namely, Hiroshima mon Amour) was simply....haunting. Also he scored for Antonioni.

I don't remember the guy's name but the score for The Third Man was neato.

Angelo Badalamenti always does good things with David Lynch.

Hans Zimmer (who I believe was a member of the Buggles) is ubiquitous but still creates some moving pieces (Lion King had a great score, for instance)

While I'm thinking about 80s crossovers, Mark Mothersbaugh (from Devo) has great playful scores (Royal Tenenbaums being the best).

Zbigniew Preisner is my favorite film composer. Mostly found in Kieslowski's films. I particularly like his work in the Three Colors Trilogy. The music always adds depth to the ideas at work on the screen, whether the tone is mysterious, whimsical, or otherwise.
