Default Star Trek: The Next Motion Pictureâ„¢

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4930474.stm

...is confirmed JJ Abrams (of "Lost" fame) is taking on the project

The as-yet-untitled feature will tell of their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission.
The most recent Trek film, Star Trek: Nemesis, was released in 2003.
Abrams will write the film with his Mission Impossible co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.
The film will be co-produced by Lost producers Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk.

The decision to revive the Trek franchise comes a year after the cancellation of spin-off TV series Enterprise, which was axed after four seasons due to poor ratings.
The film Star Trek: Nemesis - which starred the cast of the Next Generation series - also underperformed, making less money than any of its nine predecessors.
However, rumours that the film series would continue in a different form have been circulating since 2003.
Earlier this year, Next Generation star Patrick Stewart told ITV1's This Morning there was "interest in bringing the Next Generation cast together with actors from different Star Trek series".
Awesome

Why ... won't ... it ... just ... die.

Oh well, at least Brannon Braga and Rick Berman aren't involved.

I think this'll be a good way to revitalize the franchise.

Lost rocks, btw.

It's a prequel. They'd better not feel the need to set up future plotlines throughout the entire thing (I'm looking at you, Enterprise) or fill it with inconsitencies, or I'm not going to be a happy bunny .

Personally I'd have rested the franchise a little bit longer.

Meh. I like the idea of a Starfleet Academy movie/series, but Kirk and Spock are my two least favorite characters.

I have nothing against setting a film before others, but what I do hate is the obsessive in-joking that this always leads to. You know, where everything that happens must set something up for a "later" film. It gets cheesy.

Not if it's a reboot.

I don't like this trend of setting new films back in a time when the characters were younger. I won't be going to watch the new James Bond film, and I won't be going to watch this.

I'm still trying to pretend that the premise for the new Bond film isn't happening, and that it will turn out to be a version of Casino Royale set after the other films. Otherwise expect lots of wonderful nods to things that are going to happen. Mind you, at least the Bond films have never tried to have a timeline that makes sense...

Some good news.

Quote:
Speaking to Empire Online, an understandably cheesed Abrams said “The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation. People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumours of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate."

Though he won’t reveal what the storyline will be about, Abrams hints that it won’t feature Spock or Kirk at all.

Those characters are so spectacular. I just think that… you know, they could live again.
He sounds pissed about the leak, but he's not explicitly denying that the movie will be about Kirk and Spock...I'm still hoping we'll get to see that storyline.

They really should have let series/movies of Trek lie dormant at least a few more years. Besides, I don't think it's possible to make Shatner and Nimoy look that young with make up and prosthetics...

Let me propose a radical solution to that problem: hire young actors to play Kirk & Spock? Just a thought.

That's ironic since your avatar is Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker.
