I think non-native means a resolution that does not fit on the screen without leaving some unused space. Like when you watch a widescreen movie on a normal TV set, there's those black bars on the top and bottom of the movie, because the widescreen is not native to the ratio of the TV screen. Sometimes you have the option of stretching the picture though, like that old "Nibelungen" movie, that was widescreen. They pushed the movie together/stretched it vertically, and now all the actors appear tall and thin (they also make really large gestures and have tons of make-up, but that's because the movie is black and white and from a time before movies with sound). -

Then the image might be squished together/stretched. I think that's what avatar was getting at, that Windows might be blurry if you stretch the image when using an LCD monitor. -

The native resolution is the actual resolution of your LCD monitor; that is, the number of pixels in a row and the number in a column. It's therefore the physical maximum resolution that you can have on the monitor, and all other resolutions, if they fill the screen, are shown by stretching the lower resolution to the larger size.
So, for instance, my laptop monitor has 1440 pixels in a row and 900 in a column, making its native resolution (and its maximum resolution) 1440x900. If I set the resolution to something crazy, like 320x200, the image is stretched to make it 1440x900, leading to a blurry picture. Mind you, I bearly notice the blurring. |

So I should set mine to the max?

Well, you won't damage the monitor or anything by running at a lower resolution, but you'll get the best image quality running at the native resolution .

I´ve looked through this thread a couple of times and realize that everyone has higher resolution (at least 1024x768) than me. I have a 19" screen and I use 800x600.
I´ve tried the 1024x768, but I get those black bars Jaz are describing and everything looks too small for me. (I still have the sight of an eagle according to an optician I consulted ) Advice, Please! |

As for stuff being too small, try working with it for a day or two and see if it's still as bad as you think. Sometimes it looks really small when you first swich to it, but then once you get used to it it's fine. |

HEE. This thread has made my day. Dirty nerd speak.
My resolution is 1024 x 768. *Wink wink!* |

1280x1024. Any smaller and I feel cramped. Wouldn't say no to higher, though- I could certainly use it.

4800x1200. That's a 22"CRT sandwiched by 2 20" LCDs, all at 1600x1200.
I'll go higher with the CRT when I need to though. I never understand why people complain about font size. How hard is it to change it? I could set my main monitor for 2048x1536 and have the text and windows look like 640x480 if I wanted to... |

Not to mention that a lot of websites are designed to work with itty bitty fonts. I have my fonts set to 18px, and I tend to see broken designs all the time. Usually they're still readable (just ugly), but every so often I come across a page that just doesn't work... the idiot messed around with the line height or something.
I then have to turn off CSS on the page to read it... well assuming I don't just surf away immediately. Idiot web designers. Peace & Luv, Liz

Then you should try a browser that doesn't suck, like Opera.
Opera doesn't rely just on font sizes, but zooms in on (or shrinks) the entire webpage, pictures and all. I can set the zoom to 1000% which makes the text on this page at 1600x1200 over an inch tall on my screen. For example, your single sentence reply to me can be set to fill my entire screen. See below: That's a 1600x1200 screenshot reduced to 800x600 for easier viewing. Last edited by Bastich; 04-20-2006 at 09:50 PM. |

Bastich: I *do* use Opera, thankyouverymuch.
The fact that the zoom function zooms *everything*, including images, makes the function useless to me. While it makes the font more readable, it often makes the images ugly and/or unreadable. It also can cause problems with horizontal scrolling, too. Peace & Luv, Liz

Internet Explorer's "Text Size" option is next to useless, because it has no effect on font sizes that are hard-coded in CSS. Even this very forum is unmoved by it (with the exception, for some reason, of Bastich's signature).
Add to that the fact that there's no way of sizing everything else - buttons, icons and the Windows interface - without making everything hideously deformed and pixellated, and using a resolution higher than you can read the standard text at just becomes a lot of hassle for very little reward. |
