A sad loss to Children's TV. Dick n Dom in da Bungalow ends
Possibly not something that's achieved fame outside the UK but I thought I'd post about it anyway.
Today was the last ever episode of the Saturday morning Children's programme "Dick n Dom in da Bungalow" It was anarchic. It was crazy. It courted controversy (questions were raised in the House of Commons) But I, for one, will miss it greatly. It did the one thing that children's programmes so often fail to do. It let the kids be kids. The six weekly contestants (or Bungalowheads) competed in a series of games that were messy and silly and fun. It could be disgusting but kids LIKE that sort of thing most of the time. There was no pandering to celebrity. Celebrities only got a look in during the last series and even then they were expected to muck in and play along. No chance to promote their latest single or whatever. (tough luck Rachel Stevens) In a world where you can be worshipped just for being famous and kids are kept under lock and key for fear of what might happen to them it was always good to see a place where kids came first and got to be themselve. Farewell the pants dance. Adieu DC Harry Batt. Goodbye to the Prize Idiot (an idiot who handed out prizes) The creamy muck muck grand finale (and free-for-all food fight played out to Motorhead's Ace of Spades) is no more. Kids TV will be lessened by your loss. Their website is still up. Get a taste of the happy lunacy before it goes.

I dunno. I'm hardly about to suggest that children's television should be about education and serious, high-brow entertainment, but Dick and Dom always struck me as utter drivel. But then, games based on picking one's nose never really did entertain me .

But that's the point. It wasn't aimed at adults (though there were some things that adults could appreciate as well) It was for kids and it was about kids. And kids LOVE picking their noses (and going on about other bodily functions)

Never heard of this particular show, but I remember when the kids were small I used to thank God for Saturday morning TV!

The best thing to come of that show, was the parody "Dick and Don in da Pentagon" featured in the satirical political comedy show "Bremner, Bird and Fortune"
Impressionists play the roles of Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld and act out amusing sequences, including one of the infamous hunting accident. hehe.

Yet another extinct children's show! I hope the kids of today will one day look back on this as fondly as Gordon the Gopher or Ed the Duck.
I have found myself watching this far too much - it's good "clean" fun! And rather Dick and Dom than ITV's weird equivilent with the dwarf (or whatever the politically correct term is). |

When I was a child I used to love the Muppet show! The grumpy old men at the balcony, miss Piggy´s loving hugs, the cool musicians, interesting guests, you name it.

'Step left!' *kid gets shredded by saw blade* 'Ah bollocks' I remember there was one time they actually got to the end and won, but usually theyd go on for 5 weeks or so then get eaten by a wall for not knowing a password they forgot to get back on day one. I wonder whatever happened to Treguard. 'Warning team, goblins approaching!'

Yeah, I think I remember the victory. But, basically, they'd made it so hard to win that nobody ever did. And yet we kept coming back each week to watch...

It was ridiculously hard in places, like those rooms where the floor would fall away randomly etc. What did they win if they actually managed to survive? I remember they got crappy little scrolls when they lost...

I think they just got to march off into the sunset or something. Maybe they got a little trophy or something. My memory is playing tricks on me, though.
And, yes, they inevitably died when the floor gave way or they were killed by some rapidly moving enemy. |

They always marched off into the sunset, and Treguard would do his 'Don't worry kiddies! Look, Martin/James/Edwin hasn't really been mashed into a bloody pulp/fallen into a spiky pit/been anally raped by a goblin', and the kid would reappear next to his buddies, usually really pissed off cos they directed him straight into a sawblade or whatever.
