Well, look at it this way: Absurd, reactionary extremists like Fred Phelps are the best possible argument for tolerance and moderation. The crazier he acts, the more reasonable and sensible we appear to the world at large. He has gone so far off the deep end, he's actually sabotaging his own movement.

I know that, but that doesn't mean I do not have the right to feel angry and hurt and have imaginings. I hope you can tell the difference, Scott.

It's just like someone who I cared deeply for and he hurt me and I was very, very hurt and angry and I had evil fantasies about him. But I chose to be the better man, remember?

But in the end I feel sorry for Phelps and his misguided followers.

As do I. Well, I feel sorry for his misguided followers, anyway. But as a firm believer in the power of karma, the most I can do is send a prayer to hurry all the karma he has sent out into the world back to him three-fold. That's just asking that he gets what he deserves more quickly, but with him getting back what he's been putting out for thirty-odd years, that should be plenty.
