Oscar Nominations
Academy Award nominations were announced this morning. No big surprises. My only surprise was Keira Knightley getting nominated for her role in Pride and Prejudice.
I'm delighted that Brokeback Mountain received 8 nominations. I have a feeling that it will win 3 major awards minimum, Best Picture, Director and Adapted screenplay. Philip Seymour Hoffman will probably win the Best Actor for his role in Capote. My bet for the Best Actress is Reese Witherspoon. Howl's Moving Castle was nominated for Best Animated Film along with The Corpse Bride and Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Kind of a weak year for animated films. http://oscars.movies.yahoo.com/news/...keB7ga_1d.VLcF |

A weak year for animated films? When Wallace and Gromit and Howl's were both released?

Howl's Moving Castle was also very good but in my book it's the weakest of the Miyazaki directed film. It's still a lot better than your average animated film but it pales in comparison to his earlier works like Spirited Away, Laputa, and Mononoke Hime. |

I think "Weak year" is code for "no pixar release this year"
I'm hoping for Aardman to win this year |

Cars was pushed from last November to this coming June, so it was meant to be a 2005 release. |

Aardman for the win!
Even though I missed the film in the cinemas. Still, it's out on DVD very soon... |

Words can't express how happy I am for the nominees for Best Animated Feature. I was sure the Academy won't restrain from picking at least one "token" CGI-based movie instead, and frankly, while none of these three is perfect, each has more soul than all the Madagascars of the last year combined. I think the award going to Corpse Bride would make me the most glad, but no verdict will be a shame here.
I'll probably get back to this thread to discuss who I'll be rooting for in other categories, but I'd like to see more of the nominated films first (especially, but not limited to, Capote). Here is the full list, by the way.

OK, so Corpse Bride is a genuine stop-motion film? I thought it was CG made to emulate that style...

Wallace and Gromit is stop motion as well and they were released on back to back weekends. I remember the media making a big deal of that because CGI animation is so prevalent.

Fanboys are making a big deal about Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith getting no FX nomination.

I don't care who's nominated or who wins. I'm going to tune in only to see Jon Stewart.

It was nominated for makeup, but the most impressive bit of makeup wouldn't have worked without FX (legless burnt-up Anakin crawling around).

I didnt like StarWars III at all, I watched it twice for free and thought it was really crappy, Attack of the clones is much better. I just think Star Wars is very watered down, and they always use the same old thing and never have any new stuff.
