It doesn't mean "disloyalty", that's for sure. Yes, the character is meaningless that way round. Anyone who knows what the character is supposed to be usually just shakes his or her head in dismay, thinking, "Why didn't he check with a Chinese-speaking person first?! What a schmuck!" (The artist might've been at fault too, when he transferred the design onto the guy's back. )

As long as it wasn't like the pretty necklace with Chinese characters a diplomat's wife used to wear. When her husband's work brought her into contact with Chinese people she was horrified to discover it was a prostitute's licence.
