What can my father bring me from Istanbul?
My father is currently on a business trip to Istanbul, and he asked me what he should bring home for me and my mother. The problem is, we really don't know enough about Turkey and Istanbul (except for Geography and stuff), to know what we could choose.
My father said that he saw Hookahs (No one in my family smokes, even in my extended family few people smoke. And it doesn't really fit our house's decoration), we don't really have a use for a chador (the black full body veil), and turkish sweets (which is the only thing we could think of right away) are something we don't really like because we know they are very sweet(My mother and me, and actually most of my family does not like things that are so terribly sweet). So now I am asking you: What should he bring back from Istanbul? Please suggest. It would be perfect if I could find something by tomorrow (Monday is okay too, although it would be a bit of a rush for my father). Thank you all in advance! -

Well, in Serbia we drink a lot of Turkish coffee. He should bring you some authentic finely grained Turkish coffee.

I've heard that Turkey is quite famouse with their cloth designing (i.e: carpet, kaftan, weavings, scarves...) you get the idea. Why not get a traditional dress or something like that? Everytime my dad visited a foreign country, he always brought me their traditional clothes (ie. when he went to Japan he bought me a kimono) and so on. I mean, I always find other people's tradition and heritage an interesting thing.

In addition to some traditional dress or instead of (your choice) have him find some beautiful fabric that you can have something made from.

EDIT: After checking Wikipedia you are right, the original fez was from Morocco, although it looked different than the turkish fez that was adopted later in the Ottoman empire.

Mahmoul (sp?) is just barely similar to pie and isn't too sweet at all, but I don't think it's Turkish so much as pan-Middle-Eastern.
I've seen some very nice leatherwear come out of Turkey, including a knitted leather sweater (it looked better than it sounds), so maybe something along those lines? ScottMate

My brother-in-law is originally from Istanbul, and he and my sister and their kids go there to visit his family every 2 years. Though it's not really palatable to my taste buds, you might wanna ask your dad to pick up some turkish delights. Also worth getting are the colourful kilim pillowcases and rugs that are made my hand.

Traditional turkish sweets aren't nearly as sweet as what passes for turkish confection in commercial stores. It goes without saying they taste better.
How about a mosaic, or a mirror with mosaic decorative surrounds. |

Yep, that's right. They're not as grossly sweet as what you find in commercial stores.
