Three years in the making: my wand
White oak handle & sweet gum honeysuckle twisted stick that was trimmed off a staff I made about 12 years ago. I was inspired to make a wand while reading a Harry Potter novel in 2002 & I've worked on this thing off & on ever since. This past Friday I put the copper over the joint, added a wrist strap, & proclaimed it finished. It's 17.5" long & has excellent balance. No, I'm not a Harry Potter freak or anything like that, I just wanted my very own magic wand. |

It's beautiful. I especially adore how you kept its raw, natural state intact. Reminds me of African wood art, the bowls, masks, and shields, where the soul of the maker meshes with the spirit of the tree from which the wood was cut.
What kind of magic can you do with it?

Alas, I can't do any magic with it, other than make a cat lay on its back with feet in the air while I rub its belly.
I'm flattered that you want it. You can have it when I'm dead. As for how I made it, the twisty stick was something I'd had on hand for years because it was so cool, & the oak was cut from a tree that used to be next door. I carved a peg at the end of the oak handle & drilled a matching hole at the flat end of the twisty stick & epoxied them together. |

It's beautiful,
Do you have any other projects in the pipeline? I think I heard something about your "Wire Men" and "Metal Faces", and would love to find out more. Last edited by simpson_yellow; 09-05-2005 at 06:51 AM. |

Are the wire men randomly arranged, or is that a structured scene? |

Would this be push button or traditional magic?

That wand is cool, but you also made a staff? Or a walking stick? Tell me how you go about making such a thing! I'm interested.

Of course, but the carving, the woodworks, did you do that with simple tools? And where do you get, ermm, like a knob or other metal handle. Can you buy those or are you really a craftsman?

The tools used were a Swiss Army knife, a wood rasp, X-acto knife, & lots of sandpaper. I guess that makes me a craftsman.
One of these days I'll post a picture of the wonderful, beautiful bong I made out of a piece of shagbark hickory. I made it as a gift, but the more I worked on it the more I liked it, so I ended up keeping it & made another one out of maple for my friend. |
