A (brief) stop-mo Adventure Game
Salutations/greetings/hola/etc,
I'm a brickfilmer(an animator who makes stopmotion films with Lego), whose interest in Adventure Games has been rekindled by the excellant Syberia and Syberia 2: Electric Boogaloo. As if I didn't have enough projects in the works already, I've been playing with the idea of a stopmotion Adventure Game(which has NEVER been done before...*cough*) with Lego. I became enamoured with the idea, and made a quick test "game"(I use that term lightly): Play it Here(5 MB, Flash 8 Player Required) Note: The game was intended as a test to see if I could pull off the concept, hence, it's ridicolously easy. The next one will be at least 3 times harder than this. Criticisms/ideas/angry letters are welcome. -KG |

That was awesome! The animation was great, and it's good to see a new art style (for adventures, anyway).
As far as suggestions go, I would change the interface. It currently looks like a text parser, and that made it very confusing to me. It took me longer to figure out that I wasn't supposed to be typing commands into that text box than it did to actually play the demo. You might also want to abridge the walking animations, like in The Beast Within. A full-length game where a little LEGO guy walks for five+ seconds before doing anything would get annoying. |

Thanks. I'm working on the code for a graphical interface as we speak.
I hear ya on the long walking animations, but I refrained from adding a "skip" button because I didn't want my long hours of animating to go unseen. I'll put it on my To-Do list. |

Not like them!

Definitely speed up the walking. I hear ya about all the hard work, but I've seen plenty of LEGO animations that didn't go so slowly. Just speed it up or something. Otherwise, FMV+LEGO=COOL. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
Oh, and you asked about the interface. If you're going to put text on the bottom, that's fine - addressing Scoville's complaint, maybe you could just move it to the center and take out the ">". I think that would be a bit clearer. |

A Lego adventure game! Joy is unconfined!
In terms of game design, I'm sure you already know that higher interaction density is the way to go. I would want to stroke the cat, make prank phone calls and poke the armor so it falls over. Also to look around (wouldn't take much animation to do). I look forward to your next, bigger project.

Tactlessly understated

I love the little Zelda chimes when you pick up the sword and break the door. I am not bothered by the walking animation considering the small size of the game, but it would've been awesomer if there was more to explore. You know, look at the cat, poke cat with sword, cut open the couch, that sort of stuff.

That was great
But yeah more interaction would be great, and perhaps some sort of grid system so your not only moving when exiting a room but still able to keep it looking like hes actualy walking on the lego board

FANTASTIC! I'm not a fan of rendered 3D because it seems so fake. (and requires a graphics card). But this is REAL 3D. What a breath of fresh air! And the fact that Lego can be positioned so accurately means you have a level of control that makes it superior to live action. Before I saw it I thought "Lego - fun but utterly pointless" but now you have converted me. More! More! More!

The walk animation was really cool. I also liked how when you get upstairs the little guy looks around the room.
I would love to see a longer game in this style. Really cool concept. |
